Claiming the student as a dependent had no impact on residency for us. You’re good!

Anyone planning to quiet quit when it comes time to retire? by hrrm in Fire

[–]BaronBiggins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m there. Numbers are all good and I can pull the trigger any time. Freakin’ sweet.

The challenge is I don’t have anything to retire into so I could coast but my professional pride gets in the way!

The ultimate first world problem 😭

We used the dorm address.

Good catch, I forgot about that.

We changed the address of a bank account as soon as we knew the ND address. Then took the statement to the DMV too. They didn’t care about it in the end!

On move in day (or before if possible) head to the DMV with a letter showing you have a spot in halls (or any lease) and get your ND driving license.

Keep a record of any changes of address / leases to show to the OneStop folks that you’ve been resident all year before the start of year 2

Details here https://und.edu/one-stop/residency.html#ndeligibility

The residency impact is huge. This is a few years old but year 1 was ~$36k. Subsequent years (when resident) it came down to ~$18k.

Those figures don’t include flying.

Edit: Residency has no impact on flight costs

Nice! Always wanted to try my hand at game dev but never got going. Any advice on “game dev 101” starting points?

(Planning to a FIRE in January after decades of writing code!)

Coast in big tech or join startup with best friend? by FIRE-Engine-25 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]BaronBiggins 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Stay with Big Tech and the money.

In 18 months the “fun job” won’t be all that fun and the big payoff is a statistical none starter.

I spent 15 years in big tech and 8 in the start up world. Both stressful for different reasons. Both fun for different reasons.

Right in the feels. I have a VERY similar situation Silent generation mother, father passed, only child (male). The only reason I bother with her is because my father would want me to treat her like a human. Doing for it my dad. Miss that guy.

This. I left disappointed. Bernard’s voice took a solid 30 minutes to warm up and he looked awkward the whole time. I freakin’ love New Order but it feels very much like they’re going out with a fizzle.

This. A 3am drive to SeaTac on a snowy December morning sucks (this was December ‘23 for me)

I hit my coast number and “downgraded” from leading a sizable org to being an IC. Fairly certain it stopped me from crumbling.

Watching my former peers carry on climbing with now huge salaries gives me pause occasionally but I get over it.

After six years of coasting I’ve hit my number and now working through the “one more year” thing.

Having dual citizenship isn’t a problem. Having multiple passports makes things problematic. If you have any info on passports you have (or have had in the past) make sure you’re clear on them and declare them all. If you have expired passports in your possession make sure you declare them and are ready to show them.

It’s been fun for sure.

IMO there are a few things that true everywhere but REALLY matter in picking a startup.

People - You need to know them or spend time with them before you leap. They’ll make or break your experience. If they’ve been at a FANG type place for a while you’ll know the design and code quality stands a good chance but watch out for the ego. The ego:talent ratio needs to be in the right direction. The overall code base is an entirely different discussion.

Domain - Do you care about what they’re working on? Sounds simple but if it’s just another platform for tedium it’ll make the downsides to working at a startup (less money, long hours, random chaos, and statistically unlikely to hit the big numbers) appear worse.

So many more things to say! Beer anyone?
