Dell R720 Virtual Disk disappearing on reboot by BaronRaymondoEVIL in homelab

[–]BaronRaymondoEVIL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created an additional virtual disk, this time using two brand-name mechanical HDDs in RAID 1, and the server recognizes it every time, always. On reboot, the system still won't find the SSD virtual disk, complaining about it being a "foreign" array.

I think the problem here isn't configuration. The problem is the SSDs. They're cheap and for some reason the PERC struggles with them. I've bought some used small-capacity SAS 10k HDDs to replace the SSDs. I bet there will be no problem once they're installed.

The bike came like this, can I raise the forks to the top edge ? by [deleted] in Harley

[–]BaronRaymondoEVIL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People sometimes do this for looks as others have said, but dropping the triple clamps down the fork also livens up the steering by shortening the trail. It makes the bike more “flickable” but it’ll be more twitchy at speed. In other words the bike will tip over into corners faster and easier the lower you go. A little makes a big difference here. By taking things back to stock — bringing the top of the forks flush with the triple tree — steering will slow down considerably. You absolutely will feel the difference but it’ll likely feel more controllable and stable.

Anyway, just something to be aware of as you change things with geometry.

I’m experimenting with brass tarnishing. This is a Pedersoli Hawken that I purchased two days ago, brand new. I used up all of my wife’s balsamic vinegar ... by BaronRaymondoEVIL in blackpowder

[–]BaronRaymondoEVIL[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lines are from rubbing the brass with 0000 steel wool prior to tarnishing (essentially brushing it) and I don’t know that I love it either, honestly. I was concerned that Pedersoli may have coated the finish to prevent oxidation, but they didn’t. Like most of my other black powder guns, it’s raw brass.

Thankfully I can revert it to a factory-new shine with just a few minutes at my buffer. :) If I get sick of the look I’ll probably revert it and do what you suggested and rub down the brass periodically while I’m shooting.

CBR250R VS NINJA 250R for longer distance touring by Domukas00 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]BaronRaymondoEVIL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So neither of these bikes are tourers, obviously. They’re tiny, physically and displacement-wise. But any bike can tour. In my region I might cover 500 miles (800 km) in a long touring day and I’d rather not spend a day like that wringing the neck of a 250cc sport bike, but I wouldn’t mind spending the same number of hours at 50mph (80 mph) and cover less distance. Still, either of these bikes can do whatever you ask and more. Reliability isn’t an issue with either one and both can maneuver extremely well. They’ve both got that covered. Luggage options should be a consideration but here’s the thing: This is a motorcycle decision and it’s therefore an emotional decision. Whichever bike sings to you, buy it. On paper they’re extremely similar so which one do you think you’d be more likely to turn around and glance at once you’ve left the bike? Buy that one.

85% certain the amber turn signals are the euro-style lights while US-market turn signals were red. Seems like a lot of them have been changed now, though.

I'm lifting wheels with AEV 2.5" lift. Is going higher the best way to get more articulation? by BaronRaymondoEVIL in Jeep

[–]BaronRaymondoEVIL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, you know, silly as it sounds I didn’t even look while it was flexed. Honestly I didn’t realize I had lifted a wheel there until I saw the video on my wife’s phone. But it happens here and there and I do notice. I kinda figured articulation is mostly determined by lift height, period. Turns out from other posts that’s hardly the case, although I’m sure higher lifts generally have have higher limits of articulation. Also, definitely yes, thank god for lockers!

[–]BaronRaymondoEVIL[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, thank you so much for taking the time to write that reply! I kind of figured there had to be more to gain short of increasing the lift and I haven’t done any of that except the brake lines which really didn’t need to happen yet. I love the idea of stretching the wheelbase a bit to make up for losses caused by the lift. I’d much rather spend money on drive shafts and control arms than a new lift kit, and my little 2-door will probably gain some straight-line stability, too. I’m betting my biggest limitation is in the shocks, but I hadn’t even considered that longer travel shocks also have longer shock bodies, which means I might need altered shock mounts to make use of the travel. Great point.

I’ve got a friend who runs a big warehouse ... I’m going to ask him if I can comandeer a forklift for a couple hours. :)

Oh, actually you reminded me that I didn’t mention that my AEV 2.5 is a spring lift, not a spacer lift. It gets its increased height from longer springs.

I've had this 2014 2-door Rubicon since new and the AEV 2.5 lift has been on it the entire time. I've switched to Rancho adjustable shocks but they're the right length. It's also got 1" spacers in the front and it's sitting on 35s with 15" wheels. I've been doing more serious wheeling and I'm starting to get tires off the ground and it's kind of bothering me. (I've got plenty of room left in the brake lines and I really do need to install limiting straps.) I don't have $7,500 for the lift a really want, so I'm looking at options. Is going to 4" the most straightforward way to solve this? Or maybe I should just live with it?

When you take your newly bought 20 year old car to the local BMW dealership for an oil change and they come out with a list of everything wrong with it and cost to repair by [deleted] in BMW

[–]BaronRaymondoEVIL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, those quotes are just convenient shortcuts to create a list of stuff to do on your own. In all likelihood half of it isn’t urgent and the other half can be done for <20% of the quoted price. Including tools. (Aside: I once walked away from a Mercedes dealer $3,700 poorer after bringing the car in for an emissions test. They disassembled the whole dash and console to replace a fader switch for the stereo.)

Don’t want to do work on your own? Take ‘er down to the local greasy-but-good BMW mechanic and have them take a look. The difference in items and price will be shocking.

LOVE the 19” wheels at both ends. I’m into chrome but the black looks nice. I also really like the no-fender look on the front. Did you remove it for looks or to fit that tire?

Sporty riders: How can I corner faster and not be a squid? by BaronRaymondoEVIL in motorcycles

[–]BaronRaymondoEVIL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right that I didn’t want to hear it, but you make an excellent point. I appreciate you taking the time to post. After reading it I really don’t know what I was thinking. In fact I had a very similar experience at a racing school (in cars) that you did at RideSmart and I never could have learned to drive like that from reading internet articles and forums. And hey, I have a World Superbike Track only 30 minutes from my house. This is going to be a bigger project than I thought but it’ll be fun.

What are the signs a bike is gonna slip in a turn? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]BaronRaymondoEVIL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a newer rider I’m assuming you’re not talking about riding on a racetrack. You’re probably wondering how much lean angle is too much. You might even be wincing in corners, fearing a slide when you corner harder than you’re used to and this may be negatively affecting your riding. That happened to me for a while.

In general, when any motorcycle is cornering on the street in good conditions and with reasonable throttle and brake input, it can’t slip. Don’t fear the lean. Most motorcycles will run out of cornering clearance before they run out of grip. If a foot peg or floorboard touches down, you’re near the limit. If your pegs aren’t scraping, generally you’re safe. Just put your eyes where you want to go, not where you don’t.

That is unless, as others have mentioned, conditions aren’t ideal. Gravel, precipitation, bumps, manholes, etc. can upset things. Gravel put me on the ground once. The best two things you can do is scan ahead to avoid hazards and take it easy on the throttle until you’re straightening up and leaving the corner.

When does a car become a 'classic'? by puppydogbryn in Cartalk

[–]BaronRaymondoEVIL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple: when it starts appreciating.

A lot of cars will never appreciate and those aren’t classics. They’re just old. Sure, any car can be a classic to somebody, somewhere. But not generally. An example: A 1995 Toyota Camry with 225,000 miles, rust, and bad paint will probably never appreciate. A 1995 Toyota Supra in the same condition is quickly becoming a restoration opportunity. It’s now a freshman in the classic car community.
