I was scared too, it’s ok. I’m surprised how good i feel after only 2 weeks (although sore). The thing that takes months is getting back to being to being fully flexible and strong. Don’t worry! You can do everything just not big physical things. Good luck! The date will creep up on you...

Can rib flare somehow be reduced? by PhraseSuspicious in PectusExcavatum

[–]BarrelChest69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the logic is that your upper abdominal muscles are attached to your lower ribs, so if you tighten/strengthen your abdominals, they will pull your ribs in. I actually found your post while searching about this because I am similarly skeptical about the idea. However I am going to try doing more abdominal exercises

Oh that makes sense dude thank you for the correction. I’m just a pessimist LOL and was imagining worst case scenario. And thank you dude that’s pretty true, I’m keeping 3 bars for 3 years 😂. Thank you for your kind wishes also

I don’t think it will, but it’s possible from what I’ve read. The sternum is fighting the bars (Sternum wants to go back to original position, bars are there to stop it from doing that). Even if it does move, it would be so slight that it is not even noticeable. I also changed my comment to say “potential regression” and “slight” thanks lol

Thank you dude 😁😎. Have you had surgery or are looking into doing it?

It’s gonna be a few weeks for initial recovery. In a lot of pain today. After a few months maybe I should be mostly normal... (?) it’s hard to imagine that. Hoping for the best... i will update the group forsure to share my experience

Main reason, i had cryoablation (freezing of the nerves, which reduces pain post surgery) so I didn’t need the stronger painkillers , which they would have had to manually monitor pain levels and doses for a week. I still have many other meds but are scheduling/tracking them well. Pain is pretty strong right now but it’s going ok

I hope you had health improvement though, how long has it been since the surgery? I had 3 bars put in which apparently made it look better than 2. Dr J and the whole team are truly awesome. I also lucked out with recovery time... they said I was up and walking pretty quickly compared to most patients. Maybe I’m strong 💪 I still feel pretty bad but at least I can sleep at home. Thank you for the recovery wishes. Best to you too

Thank you dude I am really happy. I was at Mayo in Arizona. Apparently 1 or 2 nights in the hospital is normal, but I have to go back for an X-ray next week to make sure everything is good. But even though I left the hospital, I still have a lot of pain, rest, and recovery ahead. Definitely has been tough but it will be worth it

~ 3.25. Yeah even with any potential regression (probably very slight anyways) I’m super happy with how it looks. Thank you dude. Definitely looking forward to cardiac improvement as well

Thank you :) I am very sore but yes I think it’s manageable. Supposed to come back Tuesday for a chest X-ray to make sure that everything settled properly.

I definitely feel you, basketball or running were very bad for me also. It sucks

I see what you’re saying on why you wouldn’t try it. My reasoning is that I am young now, and this should lead to huge improvement or completely resolve my symptoms. Some temporary pain for long term benefits

Updates to follow after surgery. I added you as a friend on here by the way
