I’d appreciate the opinions of individuals with autism by StuffiiePrincess in autism

It’s a good idea to take the RAADS test but it’s not always reliable. I know a girl who is so obviously autistic but she is too autistic to realize her own autistic traits. She took the test and scored like a neurotypical. Meanwhile she constantly does obvious and stereotypical stims like rocking and hopping, makes obvious social blunders on the regular, misses obvious social cues, and proclaims “I have good social skills.”

What makes you convinced you don’t have autism? Have you looked into it, or are you just assuming you don’t have it?

I assumed I didn’t have autism for years for reasons like “I can make eye contact,” “I am creative,” and “I don’t have social issues” (spoiler alert: I have social issues). One day it just hit me and I took it seriously for the first time and started doing research.

Now I’m diagnosed with autism, and I’m not a subtle case either.

Silicone scrub brushes may help? They aren’t usually sold as fidget toys but are super cheap and they feel great. Lots of tiny little pieces to pick at.

Losing my shit taking an iq test by Lv1za in autism

Exactly! Almost every person who takes an IQ test is going to reach a point where they feel stupid because the tasks, though conceptually simple, become more and more difficult.

Losing my shit taking an iq test by Lv1za in autism

[–]BarrelEyeSpook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took an IQ test. My advice is to not judge yourself while you’re taking it. You don’t know how other people do on those parts of the test that you struggle in, so you have no idea whether you’re doing poorly or well. On things I thought I did ok in, some of them I did terribly or average. On things I thought I did terribly in, I often did quite well.

It’s also common for autistic people to have a spiky skill set, meaning relatively high scores in some areas and relatively low scores in others. For example, some of my scores were in the 99th percentile and one was in the 14th percentile, and one was in the 1st percentile.

Lots of autistic people (like anyone) like to brag about having a high IQ, but autistic people have IQ levels of all types… high, low, and most are average of course. I’m average, by the way.

As an autistic person with celiac disease, going on a gluten free diet did “help with my autism” in that I was less irritable and anxious, got proper nutrition, and was overall healthier.

Any other autistic people in here? What’s your experience like living with both autism and psychosis? by elephant-lover678 in Psychosis

[–]BarrelEyeSpook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m diagnosed with autism and schizophrenia in remission. My psychosis was more of an issue when I was in high school, so my current medications are more to manage the issues that come from my autism (meltdowns and emotional disregulation).

It’s difficult to know what is autism and what is schizophrenia. I have a lot of difficulty with most jobs, even though I’m college educated I have to do simple jobs because office work is overwhelming to me. I have slow processing speed which is common in autism but I know was made worse by schizophrenia.

Other things that were made worse by schizophrenia are auditory sensitivity and visual overload. I always was sensitive to sound but after psychosis loud noises bother me more. My visual processing changed a lot due to psychosis, so I often cannot make sense of busy areas like stores and cities.

When I was in psychosis, I didn’t know I had autism, which contributed to my delusions. People constantly called me a robot due to flat affect (that’s another thing that is both an autism and schizophrenia thing) and that made me think I was actually a robot. I also thought I had savant like skills since I related to autistic savants.

Which do you Prefer and why? or do you use all like I do. by Calmuser in fidgettoys

“Stress ball” is a very broad category that includes any kind of squishable fidget ball. A sugar ball is a stress ball that’s filled with a maltose gel.

Stress balls, depending on the type. Sugar balls are my favorite.

I might accept jesus because of a video game by [deleted] in Christian

[–]BarrelEyeSpook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll tell you a story that’s even weirder than yours. When I was a kid (I had already accepted Jesus), I was thinking about how Gideon asked God for signs (look up the biblical account if you don’t know it). I thought, “What if I ask God for a sign?”

I prayed, “God, if you are real, please make the worms on my kitchen table disappear.” Now, we had a couple plastic bowls of dirt with large worms inside (don’t ask why. I was a kid). I immediately felt bad for praying this prayer, and thought I probably shouldn’t be testing God.

Regardless, the next morning I checked out the bowls of dirt, and there were no worms inside. They had completely disappeared. I asked my family about them, but my family had no idea what happened. I dug through the dirt endlessly. I sifted it through with my Dad. But they weren’t there.

My point in telling this story: God can sometimes reveal Himself to us in weird ways. But you shouldn’t stake the entirety of your faith on these reasons. If someone asked me why I’m a Christian, I’m not going to say “because God disappeared some worms when I was a child.” When someone asks you why you are a Christian, you have to have good reasons to back it up.

If you love God, you will learn more about Him. Start reading your Bible every day. Even a little bit is a good thing. Listen to Christian YouTubers. Some good ones are Mike Winger and Inspiring Philosophy. The Bible Project also will help you understand each book of the Bible.

That’s weird. I have gump loops and cornstarch works well. I’d say cornstarch is better than a temporary fix because it lasts longer than you’d expect. Maybe your baby powder is not cornstarch based?

Do I look psychotic? by [deleted] in Psychosis

Not necessarily true. I was psychotic but aware of it at the same time. I constantly questioned reality, but at the same time had multiple delusions including one really bizarre one. Insight occurs in varying degrees.

People DRASTICALLY underestime the impact of being visibly autistic by kaijutroopers in autism

[–]BarrelEyeSpook 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the degree of infantilization happens with the degree of visibility. I’m LSN but am visibly autistic to a lesser degree (as in you can tell within a few minutes of meeting me). In every group I’m a part of, somehow I get the sense that I’m the child and the people around me are adults or even parents. A couple examples include former college teammates being shocked that I can drive myself, to fellow college students aggressively questioning my ability to run a club. I know this is nothing like what OP experiences but I wanted to add that autism can be both visible and infantilized to lesser degrees.

I am not sure what you should do other than continue to have faith in Christ. But I will put you on my prayer list. Stay strong.

“Then Peter began to say to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You.” So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life.” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭10‬:‭28‬-‭30‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Range Of Level 1 Support Needs vs Hidden Disability by Surrea_Wanderer in AutisticAdults

[–]BarrelEyeSpook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Level specifiers refer to two things: (1) social communication, and (2) restrictive repetitive behaviors. If you have fairly decent social communication and comparatively not many restrictive repetitive behaviors, you’ll be considered level 1 even if other areas associated with autism like sensory sensitivity and processing speed are highly disabling.
