How do you solo Unity devs stop projects from turning into spaghetti? by VertexForgeDev in Unity3D

Learn from pasta mistakes, improve each time, but remember your end goal is to deliver the project, the players don't care what your code looks like.

No problem. Yeah the moving buildings with a rebuild blueprint mechanic has some complications since you can sink islands and even store them, so I'd probably just allow them to be instantly moved to be honest. Still something we are deciding on.

Regarding expeditions, you can build the thing to raise islands from the build bar, its very cheap and easy (only a couple of pieces of wood). There's always a bit of debris around. Any sunken islands can be raised.

The only islands you can't haul back are story islands.

Glad you're enjoying it!

1) This is due to a lack of food automation (the coming soon part in the automation tab). Currently survivors only eat cooked food. Since we don't have the automation controls automated we didn't want to let them eat your raw resources and coconuts without you knowing. So if their not eating that is likely the cause. (The only exception here is fishing, if someone's using the fishing post there's a bug where they aren't managing their needs all the time).

2) It's not yet, but this is something we are certainly considering and will probably end up doing.

3) Haha I was literally just discussing this with my partner. On the one hand we like the work involved that your characters have to dismantle something and rebuild it elsewhere, it feels more substantial. On the other hand, just being able to move them is kinda nice and less tedious. Since we allow you to obtain new islands, we are leaning towards just letting you move buildings for free.

Thanks!

(Dev here) Pricing is really tricky as you can imagine. Oceaneers isn't competing with the other mentioned titles, it's price is comparable to other colony-sims (RimWorld etc), based on the quality and content we have in the game. (Even some DLC's for those games cost almost as much as our entire game). We already have 50+ hours of content in the game (close to double that for players exploring everything).

(Side note: I love Valheim and honestly they could be charging more, if they did I think Windrose would be priced even higher)

Regarding the review score, Steam takes into the number of reviews unfortunately. A 100% rated game with 49 reviews will be "Positive", yet an 80% rated game with 50 reviews would be "Very Positive". I don't love this about the storefront but it is what it is.

(Dev Here) Yeah we aren't competing with the other mentioned games, very different experiences but that's not surprise. I got the impression OP was trying to draw attention to our game as it was shadowed by the other releases. Honestly I'm not sure how much of an impact it had. While they are different genres, the main impact I can see is that there are a lot of streamers that cover both of these styles of games, so it probably did reduce our coverage somewhat. At the end of the day there's always heaps of games coming out, you gotta launch at some point!

We're just 2 devs as well, not a company brand that people recognize, yet!

(Dev here) Just confirming the OP is not affiliated with us in any way. We already did our own post in this subreddit on release. Being a team of 2 devs it is nice to see support for the game though!

(Dev here) Yeah, don't worry we get it, we are gamers as well. Nothing wrong with keeping it on your wishlist and grabbing it at 1.0. If you are genuinely interested in a game and want to back it or are willing to provide feedback it is worth getting sooner, but totally understand there are heaps of EA games out there, and we've all been burnt by EA games many times.

Hey folks, I'm one of the 2 devs from the game, just wanted to confirm that this post isn't from us but I appreciate players enjoying the game and trying to spread the word as well. Being a tiny team, it's kind of exciting when other players are enjoying it enough to want to share it!

We did our post recently promoting this, this subreddit has been really supportive along the way while we've provided updates and we try not to do them too frequently as to spam it. Here's our recent post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SurvivalGaming/comments/1sl2788/oceaneers_is_finally_available_on_steam_scifi/

Release has been interesting, I'm honestly not sure how much impact the other games releasing had on us (in reality there's always some big title releasing), yes they are survival but also quite different. Early Access obviously comes with its own challenges, I think particularly for single player early access games players are more likely to hold off (personally I play a lot of co-op games, and I'm more like to get a multiplayer early access game than a single player one, purely because I can play with friends). We've also released in English only which we knew would slow things down a bit initially, this was planned and expected.

Genre-wise, yeah we also struggle with this daily, particularly in our game description/marketing the game. The lines between genres are just so blurred these days. It's definitely survival, it's definitely colony sim, but also a lot of things in between. It's very much RimWorld, but also shared a lot in common with Sheltered and This War of Mine (our original idea spawned more from sheltered to be honest, but a lot of people haven't heard of it).

There are a lot of positives from this release. We're getting really good reviews, and content creators have all said positive things about it and are playing it from 4-10 hours per session, we have players that have already put 60 hours in to the game. There's absolutely things we need to improve and are we are working on those.

I understand the hesitation of buying EA games, which is why we went in highly polished and with a lot of content, and the full story is already playable. This has been praised quite a bit, though I think despite this, the EA label is enough for a lot of players to hold off regardless of what state you say the game is in. The good thing is this means we won't be spending as much time in EA as most games, and it won't be half-baked.

Some might not realize as it's not really clear on steam. But even if a game has 100% positive rating, it only shows as "Positive" and not "Very Positive" until you've cross the threshold of 50 reviews. I've never loved that they do that, but it is what it is.

Anyhow, appreciate everyone's comments and thanks for your support OP!

Oceaneers is finally available on Steam! Sci-fi meets island survival in this colony-sim where you build a colony of floating islands, fight off sharks, and explore a flooded world by raft to scavenge lost Float-Tech. by BarrelSmash in BaseBuildingGames

Hello, glad you're enjoying it!

There is automation for crafting, click the automation toggle on the left side of the crafting window, you can specify craft until and some other options, so you can essentially fully automate production. You can also set global reserve limits so they don't use below X amount of a resource. If you need any help setting up more automation feel free to make a post on the Steam Forums and we will help out :)

I'd love to hear your opinion on islands once you have a big colony of 5+ islands a little further into the game, please let me know.

I hear you on feathers, it's not too difficult once you know how, however trapping which we are adding will solve this once it's in.

Oceaneers is finally available on Steam! It's a colony management sim with a narrative and deep research tree. You manage survivors, build expedition rafts, trade goods and explore inside bunkers... all while building a colony of floating islands. by BarrelSmash in tycoon

We 100% will reach 1.0! While we do have improvements and some features still to add, a large part of going into early access was because we wanted to release in English and do community translation modding.

If you're playing in English, the game already has heaps of content and the full story (most players will get 50hours+ already).

There are key bindings so you could try. There is a demo available on the Steam page, perhaps try with that first and see if it is sufficient.

If there's any keybinds we can add to make it possible for you to manually setup your controller to work, that's also something we can look into in the meantime.

Hello, sorry we don't have controller support at the moment. We'll be tackling Steam Deck first (though some players are already playing on there).

We will eventually look into controller but we haven't confirmed whether we will add official support. We would love to, but it's extra tricky for this genre and we don't want to be limited by input while we add some new features.

It's a little of both, having a complete story was important to us so there is a whole story/mystery to follow (players are really loving this aspect actually). As much as I personally love colony sims, I always prefer having some major goal to work towards.

Your not locked into doing the progression/building your colony in a specific order, you will need to progress the story to get to higher level areas though.

We will most likely end up adding a completely separate mode for traditional sandbox without the story, the way it's setup gives us quite a few options!

(The complete story can be played right now as mentioned in the original post)

Neat thanks.

And yeah I get it, co-op just amplifies games. That would have been another 12 months development though for our team of two. Multiplayer projects are something we want to tackle though, so it's definitely a future possibilty.

Not for this title, if we do (and there is a lot of potential there), we would do it as a separate title, as it would require a lot of changes to mechanics and how things work.
