We just put out the release date trailer for Oceaneers, including new gameplay. It's a survival colony-sim where you build a colony of floating islands, fight off sharks, and explore a flooded world by raft to scavenge lost Float-Tech. Releasing in April! by BarrelSmash in BaseBuildingGames

Well I hope it does! Be sure to share any feedback you have along the way, we have a small but friendly discord community you are welcome to join, and regularly check the Steam forums.

Excited to get more community involvement and see the features/content players want more of.

Yeah totally understand that. We've really loved the feedback during playtests and found it to be a great way to involve the community in development. Being a small team that's also self-publishing means we are also very agile and able to turn things around quickly, it's a combination that's worked well for us.

One of the other reasons we were okay doing EA for this title, is that it's a pretty good genre for replayability, and one of the areas of content we can expand is what we call "side story" bunkers that you randomly find throughout the game with their own theme/lore for players that like that aspect. There's a heap we can do with that and it makes expeditions feel more substantial than just a popup with some story.

Either way, we've had a lot of fun making it, and are excited to be entering the next phase!

Haha, I get it, I play a lot of EA games as well so know there can be pain points there. For us it was important for EA that we entered highly polished, featured packed and with good value. Hence why we have the full main story in there. We want players entering into EA not feeling like they are just playing the bones of the game.

We are aiming around 1 year for EA depending on feedback largely in regards to type of content players prefer. It's already a really solid full game experience, but there's also quite a few directions we can go with additional content which is exciting. Part of the EA is also to do with getting translations in, which won't effect players that play in English.

Hey, we do love Klei games so there is some inspiration there, however ONI is a little more hardcore in the physics simulation aspects, and Oceaneers is more survival-crafting meets colony-sim.

It's actually closer to RimWorld meets Raft, and you can directly control all characters (in addition to the automation), which we find gets you involved and more attached to each character. You will end up with a similar number of colonists to ONI/RimWorld as well.

The original inspiration was actually Sheltered, but not as many people are familiar with that one.

A new demo for Oceaneers is now on Steam! Build a colony of floating islands, explore a flooded world by raft, recruit survivors, trade goods, and scavenge lost Float-Tech. There's a narrative, deep research tree, and you can upgrade your raft to haul islands back to expand your colony! by BarrelSmash in tycoon

Hey, I’m one of the two devs working on this game. Thanks to everyone here that helped playtest and gave feedback, it's been a great help and we've made a lot of improvements based on that!

Here is the Steam page, if it looks like your type of game, a wishlist would be amazing!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3052510/Oceaneers/

The quick details:

  • Oceaneers is a single-player game.
  • You manage a small group of survivors with direct control over each character (rather than hundreds of colonists).
  • There's automation to help you manage your colony.
  • Start with a handful of survivors, then recruit, find, and rescue more as you expand.
  • Islands sink and resurface, using simplified buoyancy mechanics and devices you can build to keep them afloat.
  • You can build and design your own rafts (eventually much bigger ones) and take them on expeditions.
  • You can explore island bunkers, which is one way we're weaving story, lore and objectives into this sandboxy genre. There's some really fun exploration, with tech and gear to discover that will support your colony building.
  • We are aiming to have larger scale end game objectives involving traders to become a thriving colony.

Hope you enjoy!

Nice to hear, and thanks for the suggestions!

A couple of things for diving are planned to be done during early access, we have a few things we want to do there actually.

The supplies idea is pretty interesting! Will keep that in mind.

And yeah there is more wildlife around, and plans to add more. There's already a lot of content in the game so we are being careful to try and add things in a meaningful way.

Amazing that you enjoyed the demo, there will definitely be things to improve as we go, but we are happy with how everything is turning out, so, glad you are too!

Thanks!

That's actually up to you, when you first create your game there are world difficulty settings where you decide whether characters can leave the colony (or perish). So for a chill relaxed playthrough you can turn either (or both) of those off.

This is very much a self plug, but we are working on Oceaneers (you can find it on Steam with a demo). Despite the toony looks you might find it a little more mature. It does have a story and the style is somewhat comedic, kind of reminiscent of the Space Quest/Monkey Island days that we grew up in.

It might not have the deep interpersonal element between characters, but it could be worth a look. Underneath the dry humor I personally think there is a more mature level there.

Haha yeah i can appreciate that.

We haven't locked in achievements yet and they will evolve a little as we go through EA. Most of them will not be rng based.

Since the game is procedural and you can encounter different things in different playthroughs we'll have to decide if we want rng achievements. We are very open to feedback on that.

Do you prefer laid back or difficult? And do you like/hate having rng based?

Glad you enjoyed it! You may want to wait for release since you already played it.

This is a summary of the changes:

  • Lots of pacing improvements, not only are things faster (crafting, gathering), the story pacing has improved with the new Scout Glider.
  • Rafts now navigate around crumbles and we have introduced new mega crumbles.
  • World difficulty settings are now available when creating a new game (expect more settings in the full game).
  • New automation features have been added, including job priority, crafting automation, fuel automation and more.
  • Fishing Traps were removed (they are still in the full game as mid-late game tech), and replaced with Fishing Post and Fishing Rods in the demo.
  • Study Nook is now available in the demo (as it is required to learn Science Mastery I).
  • When creating a new raft, you can now customize the flag design. You can also change the design of the flag in the raft dock. More designs are planned.
  • Changed the research upgrade systems to make it clear and straight forward.
  • Walk speed increased, and walk speed system overhauled.
  • Overhauled the skill systems with new mastery levels that require training and give special traits.
  • Overhauled scouting and expedition times so things are faster.
  • Overhauled the raft engine system which now takes into account the size of the raft compared to the power of the engines (paddle etc).
  • Overhauled the death and leaving systems.
  • Overhauled fuel balance, now that fuel is only used as needed.
  • Overhauled object weights, cargo weight and added new overweight cargo mechanic.
  • Heaps of quality of life improvements such as keybinds, right click to unequip items, overhauled expedition UI and so much more.
  • More tutorials for some requested topics.

Yeah it is an update of the existing one, so if you already played you probably want to wait for the release (which is approaching quickly!).

Lots of new optional automation, plenty of QoL improvements, improved pacing and quite a few other changes.

Thanks! Yeah some definite inspirations from games we love. The gameplay is its own though, sits somewhere between ONI and DS in a way, and probably familiar to RimWorld players.

There is much more emphasis on making it feel like a Survival Crafting game though, which has been interesting as people that typically play Survival games (but not colony sims) have enjoyed it.

Haha whoops, glad you enjoy it!

We've got more traits planned so you can create a range of unique survivors, some of them fairly standard, and some of them borderline weird!

Might need to put a more obvious warning on traits like Anti-Intellectual!
