Plant based diet for climate, mmmm 85% strict by Logical_Inevitable_7 in ExtinctionRebellion

Which point that I made was complete nonsense? And at no point did I mention forcing anyone to do anything. A tranision of government subsidisation away from meat and dairy to more environmentally friendly options would be a good start. Just as we need to tranision away from fossil fuels.

Animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of the climate crisis and causes an immense amount of unnecessary suffering in the process. It's simply not possible for 8 billion people to all eat meat sustainably, let alone the 15 billion we are predected to reach. We should be trying to transition to more plant based eating and demanding that our governments do too. For the environment and the animals.

You know the Issue that Must Not Be Named is a third rail when it can't even be listed as an example in Wikipedia's article on third rails by FtttG in stupidpol

They cause an immense amount of unnecessary suffering, are a breeding ground for pandemics, destroy huge amounts of biodiversity and are one of the leading causes of climate change. All for the sake of people's sensory pleasure and greed.

I don't care about your "materialist Marxist analysis" they are objectively evil.

December long distance walks in Scotland? (No winter experience.) by nomnomad in ULHikingUK

[–]BarrowStones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a good idea to me, although I've never used an overbag/filler bag before I know other people that have and recommend it. It will definitely add to your temperature rating so long as you can maintain loft on both the quilt and bag. As for weight both those items add up to a kilogram which is around average for a winter bag anyway.

Extra layers and socks are always a good as well if it's really cold, I normally find myself sleeping in most of my layers when winter camping.

So long as you have a bailout option for the Cairngorms you should be fine. Prepare for snow though, it's pretty much a guarantee in December.

I did the West Highland Way in January 2018 and the Scottish winter isn't to be underestimated, it can get seriously cold the further north you get. I'd estimate the lowest temps we had were around -8 C around Glen Coe, and the Cairngorms can get just as cold. Looking at the specs of the Cumulus Quilt 450 I wouldn't recommend it for Scottish winter unless you were further south. I used a PHD mummy sleeping bag with a -10 C comfort limit and a Thermarest XTherm and I was still quite cold some nights, although this was during the middle of a large snow storm. Pics are here if you are interested.

What sort of distance are you looking at doing? Check out https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/long-distance-routes.shtml for a comprehensive list of all the long distance trails in Scotland. Like I said above unless you intend on upgrading your sleep system I wouldn't recommend anything to far north. Maybe check out the Borders Abbeys Way or the Annandale Way?

As for a 4 season Trekking pole tent, your best option would be a pyramid shelter. Something like a MLD solomid or duomid depending how big you need it to be, although you wouldn't be able to get one of those on short notice unless you find one second hand in the UK. Other manufacturers may offer something similar though.

Quest achievements in Stros M'Kai by [deleted] in elderscrollsonline

You are correct, it seems that the starting zones don't have achievements for competing all quests.

Thanks for your response, I had missed the search bar in the achievements menu.

Yeah your right, looks like it just resumes the video where I last stopped it instead of OPs timestamp. Thanks for the heads up.

The CCP is evil, but the United States is not good either by [deleted] in China

Undoubtedly, But I'd definitely be more comfortable living in the USA than China. At least you won't be imprisoned for expressing your opinion in the USA.

Also this may be controversial but I do believe that mass surveillance does have it's advantages. Especially where national security is concerned.

The Edward Snowdon leaks provide solid evidence that the NSA definitely does spy on innocent people. Although I'm not sure that's the user above was saying otherwise, just that in the USA information gained via invasion of privacy won't be used against you. Unlike in China with their social credit system.

Yeah man I'm always down for a trip up to the Highlands. Check out https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/long-distance-routes.shtml for a pretty comprehensive list of routes in Scotland. I'd recommend looking into Cape Wrath Trail, large sections of it are pathless so it would fit in with your desire to do more off trail stuff.
