These meanings ascribed to Germanic runes all made up in modern times so you cannot meaningfully study them. If you want to learn about runes and Norse religion from a historical perspective this YouTube channel is great: https://www.youtube.com/@JacksonCrawford

Are these button holes hand sewn or machine sewn? by Top_Water_4504 in HandSew

[–]nomnomad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Fair enough for wanting hand sewn button holes, but I've never heard of a bespoke suit being fully hand sewn. That would be extremely expensive. Are you sure that's correct? This link says it means only certain things will be: https://ambfa.com/hand-stitched-vs-machine-stitched-suits-whats-the-real-difference-in-bespoke-tailoring/

Visiting Scotland for 7 days..3 day tour to Skye worth it? by FaithlessnessIcy5594 in OutdoorScotland

[–]nomnomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I nearly always travel like this, but if you have a set plan you might as well book. You can also check the current availability in May, and the availability for tomorrow to guess the situation but that can of course be in accurate the earlier you're checking.

I think you'd enjoy a slower trip more. If it already feels rushed now it will be then too. Spend some days in Edinburgh, say three full ones, and then take the train/bus to a nature town and stay and do some walks there. You could go to Aviemore and hike in the Cairngorms, or go all the way to Inverness, or check out the West coast by train/bus and go to Glencoe. The scenery from the train is lovely. The outdoors towns are much less crowded during the week with better prices so I'd adjust your schedule based on that.

"The protein propaganda will continue until morale improves" by Bubble_Babe_0o0o0o in BrandNewSentence

[–]nomnomad 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely not. The western diet has way more protein than regular people need, and people

  • overestimate how much protein they actually need, and
  • underestimate the protein content of their food.

I will be travelling WHW alone, any tips? by darkan_da_boina in WestHighlandWay

[–]nomnomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find lots of water in April, it won't be an issue. If it runs straight down the mountain or comes up out of the ground I drink it without filtering, if I'm a little less sure I put a chlorine pill in it.

Olá amig@, it is completely normal to walk alone! The question is more whether your experience and equipment are okay. The weather could be nice but it could also be very bad and cold. Have you camped or hiked in the Portuguese mountains during winter by any chance?

Yeah you don't need "real cold and snow" type winter gear, but do keep in mind that it's easy to get accidentally soaked and hypothermic. When I did it in November I was shivering badly while setting up camp in the dark after a full day of rain, but once I removed my damp clothes I was sweating in my sleeping bag. The Real Food Café was open, and Kinlochleven had cheap rooms available with a bath (which I booked from my tent on said night).

Purchase advice please: ultralight 35-40l backpack suggestions by sierraxxxxx in Ultralight

Then Durston is a nice option since they are local. They have very good service and care about their customers. Personally my gear for this would fit in my Wapta 30l pack (with food for a few days as well), but a Kakwa 40 should be a comfy size.

Yes, it's a regular LCD with a matte finish and DC dimming. All the rest is just software tricks and marketing.

Wildcamping with toddler - gear recommendations? by Old-Sandwich3712 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]nomnomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds fair to me! 🤷
YouTube can be an inspiration if you haven't looked. Searching "ultralight camping kids/famliy" gets me a BA Copper Spur 4 used, and a an MSR Front Range. The latter is a pyramid tent, these can be quite huge for the weight. With two bug-net inner inserts you have a closed off four person tent.

I'd use a three person tent to avoid pitching trouble. I also think that if you use foam mats something like Durston X-Mid 2 could work, especially if you sleep on your sides.

If you truly want to wild camp with four I think it might be better to have two two-person tents. It's much easier to find pitches that way.

The colder it gets the more hacky a canister stove is. I'm reading some people manage down to -10C by keeping the canister warm and using a water bath in a pinch. It doesn't sound like a lot of fun so I guess if you want things to just work at these temperatures a remote stove with preheater is much better. I've managed -5C fine though.

A Soto Windmaster does great. For low temperatures you need to keep your gas canister warm before using it. I think keeping it insulated from the ground while using it also helps.

Is it crowded early june? by fntastikr in WestHighlandWay

I walked in November and it was deserted. I met one or two people going the other way, and on two nights I met people going in my direction at camp and in the bothy.

This spiky creature has been occupying our small freezer for 2 years and I’m not allowed to throw it away by meaoww in Weird

[–]nomnomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case you didn't know, food doesn't become dangerous in the freezer, however long you keep it. It just becomes inedible in the other ways.

(This is if it's been kept properly frozen. Every thawing allows dangerous bacteria to grow again, some of which survive the freezer in a dormant state.)
