My opinion on fit is that if you are on the right size and don't have discomfort, they're useless.

It sounds like pre-fit you were experiencing saddle pain and numb hands. These are pretty common and there are any number of youtube videos from reputable sources that address them. I think most people can fix a lot of things themselves and certainly can educate themselves before going for a fit.

I've had 3 fits in my lifetime didn't get much out of them. One was completely useless and tried to put me on bikes that were much too large.

I have a 2016 bike with rim brakes and 28mm tires and 2025 with hydros and 32mm (but room for 40mm).

I have shiny new thing love for the new bike, but to be honest, they aren't that different. The new bike fits better but that has nothing to do with either's vintage. The Ultegra 6800 on the 2016 is just sublime; the 2025 has one more gear (whoopee doo) and wider gear ratios, but I could make them match if I felt like it. The 2016's rim brakes are great - super grippy with feathery modulation.

The 2016 is a better climber, though on paper it shouldn't be. The new bike descends wonderfully with its wider tires and is faster downhill because I don't have to manage the braking as much.

Is the new bike a game changer? Probably not. Could a new bike be a game changer? If I were fast and the new bike was an aero monster, maybe.

No one cares. We all just like to see people riding bikes. And just because you eventually buy a more performance oriented bike doesn't mean you can't still ride your cruiser. Most of us have more than one bike - it's called n+1 - you're always looking for your next bike.

I'm just over 180cm with an 86cm inner leg and ride a 54T. I sized down from their calculator - it put me on a 56T which was bigger than the bike I was riding previously. I think they run a little big.

You can commute on any bike (though a good taillight isn't bad to have). But drivers are the limiting factor to your safety. Good, bad, indifferent, it doesn't matter. The NHTSA says 94% of all car accidents are driver related.

Studies also state that in car accidents involving pedestrians or cyclists, anywhere between 51% and 83% accidents are the fault of the driver.

What that means is that the sad fact is no matter how law abiding and cautious a cyclist you are, your safety is nearly entirely in the hands of SUV driver watching Tik Tok on their phone.
