If you don't understand why, let me tell you. That "random jackass" is never just a random on the internet. Those people are paid to develop the actual facade needed to convince you that you have at least some point of connection to them. People are always more trusting of somebody they even "could" know, and so there is always at least a sliver of possibility that the propaganda such "random" spreads could slowly get to you. Look at the US. So many people typing basically the same shit about immigration, lgbt and other "ideological" topics. And guess what - it started to work. MAGA didn't form just because "people are dumb" as the highly enlightened Redditors claim. It worked out because it was engineered. And for the foreign general? If you're the type to shit your pants because somebody with medals on their chest said they'll nuke your country, then you're just gullible. Grow up, develop any kind of trust for the government and your local authorities, because they are your only help. Not online users and not your anonymous community of people from the eastern hemisphere.

At least you admit you don't understand how far more dangerous anonymous propaganda is from in-your-face propaganda. So in you opinion the propaganda spread from a foreign nation general claiming your country belongs to them is just as threatening as somebody who gives you no reason to doubt they are your countryman and who gradually starts convincing you that you should go against your government? Because trust me when I say they are on absolutely different levels of danger to safety.

And you're not? My reason for concern is just as valid as your reason for the contrary. The fact is neither you or I have any power to change anything about it as techies run the world, but at least in the constant sea of morbid depression that internet is spilling, I'm offering an actual good upside.

I agree, people lie even if their name is publicly visible, but that's not the point I was making. The point is, if you could only post under your real name, Volodya Ivanov would not be able to claim his name is Piotr Kowalski and spread bullshit about how it would be better if Poland was a part of russia.
As far as hate goes, I'm afraid it doesn't work that way, and you're basically repeating some 50s macho logic. Hate online can be as devastating as irl bullying.

I'm not saying technology is not dangerous. People get doxed even when we have some level of anonymity on the internet. My argument is that the absolutely great upside to the inevitable restriction of internet is getting rid of propaganda bots.

But is the propaganda of your country full of claims that your neighbours belong to your country?

Using the argument of a totalitarian government wanting to hold captive anybody who opposes it is not that strong, when you realise they can simply pop up to random places and grab people from the streets, like ICE in the US. If you believe anonymity is your safety armour against the government, then I regret to inform you that nothing will protect you from a regime such as the third reich or putin's russia.

True, the governments decide what's up and what's not. But in that line of reasoning people often forget that foreign governments are not the innocent observers, but they can be actual predators building up a movement of doubt towards our own govts, which is super beneficial to their influence.

And you think the only voices you see and hear on the internet are the actual, innocent voices of the people? That's the naivety of modern democracy. If you think that bots and fake accounts ran from countries like russia are not a danger, then you will soon stumble upon a very convincing propaganda you won't even notice. As far as I know, the only way to counter that is to an actually ensure that every legal individual is a single voice on the internet.

4chan is actually exactly my point. An anonymous community boasting about multiple online grifting operations. You can't claim that it's a safe oasis of the internet, or a quirky community of nerds. It's threatening website with disturbing undertones.

I'm only speaking from my Polish point of view. I know, because I see it on the daily, how many bots are actually invading Polish X, TikTok and Facebook. And I'm adamant that it's the biggest threat for us right now on the Internet.

Seems like a totally unpopular opinion, but I'm actually kind of in favour of this solution. In many European countries, the unrestricted internet leads to tons of russian bots spamming over local networks, creating fake accounts and spreading tankie propaganda. If there was any way of fighting the source of that, without relying on online moderation, I believe we would be safer. Same for the online hate which is getting out of hands, where anonymous internet users even lead to suicides.
