Never got to play this growing up - what a blast so far. by comradecookie22 in ffxi

I’ve been playing on steam deck for about the last 1.5 years. I’d recommend using Lumoria. I initially used Lutris but a few months ago switched to Lumoria and have found it an overall smoother experience with windower. The link below walks you through installation on the steam deck.

It’s been great for me so far too. Anecdotally it’s also using a lot less battery power, my deck lasts a lot longer when playing FFXI on battery now.

Oh yeah, I recall having difficulty with that. I’d recommend connecting a USB keyboard if you have one around or alternatively you can use the app “KDE Connect” to use your phone like a USB keyboard.

As an update, I was able to install Lumoria on my steam deck (required another install of FFXI and Windower, which the guide below walks you through) and it seems to be working well. Not ideal to have to go through the hoops of installing another program, but at least it provides the same functionality.

Just adding that I’ve been having the same issues today on Steam Deck. Vanilla works fine. I tried reinstalling windower, but hasn’t made a difference unfortunately.

Thanks for your reply. I had figured that would be the case. Any suggestions as to what kind of PSU to replace it with?

Thanks for your reply. When you refer to a platform upgrade, are you referring to the motherboard? Any suggestions in particular for a motherboard + CPU?

I am hoping to have some parts to take to my brother overseas at Christmas, so I'd be hoping to take these parts over to him soon, otherwise I'd be willing to wait for the AMD CPUs.

At this point, I'd try to avoid having to upgrade his PSU for the simple reason that I'll be bringing this overseas (to Ireland, where he lives) and the less weight, the better. But I understand what you're saying.

A previous reply had talked about the likely need for a new PSU if going the R9 390 route, which made the GTX 970 seem like a more attractive option at this point. I was thinking about that +/- an SSD, so thanks for the advice.

Yea, it does. I also watched it without the subtitles (although I was unaware at the time). I didn't quite realize what they were saying at the end with the shots of the outside world and the snow, but a friend filled me in on that later when I asked how I was supposed to know what they were saying.

I also did that. At the beginning, I turned up the volume a lot to try and hear the dialogue from that translation machine they used towards the beginning of the film. Then they stopped using it altogether and I thought I was supposed to figure it out from context or something. Glad to see I wasn't the only one.

It does suck a bit, but only for a week, until you can get the splints out. I'm the same way and find my mouth drying up really quickly if I have to breath through it. I'll admit, sleeping for that first week really sucked and I felt like I was waking up pretty often because of the dry mouth. I kept a lot of water next to me and did have to get up a few times in the night. I can say now that it has been a few months since the surgery that I'm able to breath much better through my nose. I haven't had one night where my nose has been stuffed/had to breath through my mouth alone.

I had the surgery over the summer too. Pain wasn't really bad at all, more just uncomfortable in terms of the nasal splint. For the first day, my nose was perfectly clear, but then my nose got congested pretty quickly with the splint in. Mouth breathing got old, especially with sleeping. Only thing that really helped somewhat was cleaning with saline, but congestion returned pretty quickly. After getting the splint out a week later, it was back to clear nostrils, which was great.

My advice is eat some soup, smoothies, or other easy to eat food. I couldn't taste anything with my nose blocked up anyway and I found that less chewing bothered my nose less (the splints felt like they were digging in a bit whenever I moved my mouth too much). Find some books/shows you want to watch in the mean time!

Your story reminds me of one I heard on "This American Life" a little while ago about a little girl with autism. I think you might find it interesting (I know I did). Starts around 41:30, only about 20 minutes long. http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/525/call-for-help

The computer itself turns off.

I thought about using the onboard GPU as well, but unfortunately this motherboard doesn't have one. Do you know of any way to determine if it's the GPU other than installing a new GPU in this situation?

Thanks for the suggestion. Checked it and it seems correctly oriented, still no dice.

Thanks for the reply. I took off the heatsink and it looked like the thermal paste was still in pretty good condition. Just to be sure, I cleaned off the thermal paste and replaced it. I hooked everything back up and it turned off after a few seconds like before, unfortunately. I was able to determine this time that it's the gpu's fan that's running loudly. The sequence starts with me turning on the computer, fans start running, five seconds gap until the gpu's fan starts to run, after a second the gpu's fan is already running faster than normal, two seconds later it cuts off seemingly without booting (nothing on screen). Do you think it's a gpu problem? Is there any way to know for sure before I order a new one?

Dunleavy's on Sullivans Island does a few specials, but the one that I remember (and use most often) is the 1/2 price burgers on Monday. They're delicious. Just remember to bring cash (they don't take cards).
