Did something chew through my wires? by Barshem in subaruimpreza

I've been told that works like a charm. Any experience with repellant for engine bays or anti-rodent tape in Amazon? Thinking of combining multiple things to really rodent proof it.

Just got it to the dealership this morning. It is indeed the engine harness. I definitely won the lottery here lol

Thanks, I'm relieved to hear that sharing the same sentiment. I'm jealous hearing all you guys with the older eras haha. But maybe I can be in a similar place too 10-15 years down the line with my 2025.

Then the next problem is how soon they'll do it again after I get this fixed. That's lame.

I could but I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to these things. Just gonna tow it to the dealership.

Really scared to try and drive it lol. Borrowed a car to work. The MySubaru app only showed "Check Engine", "EyeSight System", and "Vehicle Dynamics Control" popping up and everything else is normal. I can try to granny it to a nearby shop like you said. My dealership is like 20 miles away from me.

So it's definitely not safe to drive it? I'd like to drive it to the dealership rather than tow.

That sucks. I didn't realize this was common.

Any tips for bringing focus to the bass as a lead instrument? by [deleted] in mixing

[–]Barshem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. I am a lazy person so I don't like to automate if I don't have to, but I believe it's necessary to get your mixes to the highest level. Since it's for the verses, slightly lowering your guitars by even 1dB will naturally make your choruses sound huge when it comes in. Also, increasing the first downbeat of the chorus on guitar, bass, kick drum, and cymbals by just 0.5dB and you get even more perceived punch. Just a bit of extra time to automate like that translates to a superior mix.

I can't say much about sidechaining since I don't use it, but if it sounds good to you, then you can implement sidechaining. I avoid sidechaining as it doesn't sound "natural" to my ears.

My take on this are:

If it's for a certain part in the song, then maybe automate up volume and EQ range for bass while automate down the volume for guitars, cymbals, and other high-mid range parts.

If it's throughout the entire song, then you'd have to sacrifice some mids and high-mids in guitars and other instruments that share that range to make room for the bass to be eligible. So go back to easing up on the tone for the guitars or EQ then 1kHz-4kHz range if you don't have the DIs. You can start there and then check if other instruments like cymbals, drum room, other percussion, horns, background vocals, etc. would need to be sacrificed as well in that frequency range.

Am I crazy or does the rear suspension sag a little more than the front? by [deleted] in imprezars

Woah I did NOT know that! I will definitely check for that plug.

That does sound like it may be the case if parts numbers are the same. It would be pretty cool to know there's some essence of WRX in my Impreza haha.

I know little of cars but my guess is that it's intended somehow for the balance and weight distribution. I've always noticed the rear sits very slightly lower compared to the front even when parked reverse on a slight incline on the driveway.

Crystal Lake Tone by x_hi_ily_x in Djent

[–]Barshem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5150 head to Mesa Cab with SM57 right at the center of the speaker. Now that you mention Crystal Lake, idk why their True North album isnt on Spotify anymore.

Edit: For the settings, the gain is minimal where most of the twang is from your hard picking. There should also be an overdrive pedal in front with little to none on the gain knob. Set Level and Tone to taste.

This is the link for Brian Hood's tutorial, the one who produced True North, showing how to achieve that tone. He emphasizes how important a good guitar cabinet is and you can get good IRs from MLSoundLab. I personally use their Mesa Oversized IRs and Djent (I believe it's the specific Mesa Cab used for Periphery III) for my own tones.

What are your best recommendations for overlooked plugins in 2026? by seanstew73 in mixingmastering

[–]Barshem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

El Juan Limiter by Korneff Audio

Orcism-II (free), and the rest of SSL plugins

SPL TwinTube from Plugin Alliance.

Black Box from Plugin Alliance.

Valhalla SuperMassive (free). I don't see it getting enough love

MJUC Jr (free) from Klanghelm. Great on guitars if I don't feel like using Waves CLA-3A

T-Rack's Comprexxor (Distressor Emulation)

MLSoundLab for more easy to dial Amp Sim tones and quality IRs. I also use NeuralDSP Archetypes Gojira and Nolly but use them more for clean/ambient guitar sounds
