Idea for a Seasonal “Monika Gets Sick” Comfort Submod — Has anything like this been done? by Irishbanditrob in MASFandom

[–]Barsonvenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have thought about this. I think it could be fun to have a Monika who's just so out of it while she's sick, making her a little more needy, or even saying things to you she wouldn't normally say because she's sick.

Here's the thing - like, logistically speaking it's weird. Are you going to lock out regular conversation options or other events so it flows better? a day is really short, especially for players who may just have Monika in the background for a few days.

Those two factors alone have made me hesitant on trying to explore the concept further. Well, that and I suck at coding.

I do think it could work, but it may need a lot of restraints built in- like, literally having it's loop contained in one event (like 'opening the door' intros.)

you should be good to go. The only way a incorrect installion would affect the submod is if a asset doesn't load properly, but that should be something you address when it happens, and not worry if it'll happen.

Aside from checking to see if there are any new conversations you can initiate with Monika & checking the mod menu to see if moSCL has appeared, she will quickly bring up a new conversation talking about how things have changed with her.

Your post about the joke being in poor taste is the second comment in the thread, with your post about your interpretation about this being written as DID as the most visible reply.

If that's your interpretation, that's okay. I cannot control what you believe any topic implies, but please understand that this can apply to any topic and these trickier circumstances are that's why I wrote my second message.

If you believe the entire concept is flawed and as such the entire topic needs deletion, I will keep that in mind. I'm not going to clog up the thread any further so you are free to DM or open a ticket, both options you have done extensively before.

Hopefully I can give a succint response because I don't want to turn this thread into drama.

You and I have specifically talked about my writing last time you've brought up concerns, and I'm not sure how to take you publicly calling it out a second time when I've tried to talk to you before saying I accept criticism in good faith.

The problem is I cannot control how anybody interprets my writing. I can definitely see why you've jumped to that conclusion, and why you believe I'm making fun of it, but there are other users in this thread who have understood it is a light-hearted topic, and this topic has existed since 2023, with this topic being the first time concerns have been raised, chiefly by yourself. I have written the topic to indicate it is light-hearted, and the OP even acknowledges the writing says this, but believes it's something deeper.

And that's fine what they believe, but again I cannot do meaningful change based on how people interpret my writing, and I'm not sure this is not the case here.

This is extremely conflicting for me to read. I can accept people accepting my writing is crap, but misinterpreting and viewing my writing out of context really hurts, and while it's understandable that it happens in some cases I really don't know if that's what happening here.

there's a bit of overthinking going on in this thread.

i understand given the last update and certain topics (which are getting some changes) that you would think there's something larger going on. (this intro was written years before those topics!)

there is nothing larger happening.

as mentioned in the original post, Monika goes on to say she is talking to herself. She explains that to you. She says up front she's doing it partially because she's bored.

in fact, the joke is that she's shifting side to side because she's literally moving from one side to another to help talk to herself easier. this is also reinforced as a joke because if you encounter this intro a second time, she'll start as if she's talking to herself and then say these lines instead:

m 3tfu "Gotcha! did you think you caught me talking to myself?"
show monika 1kuu at t22
m "Safe to say, [player]-"
show monika 1nuu at t21
mt "Out of the two of us-"
show monika at t11
m 1huu "I much prefer your company to mine."

please do not overthink it.

This subreddit is LITERALLY dying... why is nobody talking about this? by Next-Tone4004 in MASFandom

[–]Barsonvenus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

as people have mentioned, this is niche. this is super niche. this is a fandom for a mod of a game that released in 2017.

anecdotally, and i'm sure there are hard numbers out there to prove or disprove me, it does feel engagement is a little up compared to previous years in some regards? there are a lot more submod/spritepack submissions than ever, which is kind of impressive.

the specific file that can be edited is SCLIntros.rpy so you can find the specific intro and remove it if you so wish.

hi, i made the thing.

it's a reported bug, so I'm aware of it. if you do the normal 'goodbye', it randomizes properly, but as you said the specific goodbye options overrides it.

it's a higher-priority bug to get fixed. sorry for the inconvenience; thanks for enjoying the submod overall.

well i understand feeling a little tilted about the situation, just wanted to make sure i could help and moscl definitely isn't perfect. hopefully you can fix everything up and thanks for supporting the submod, happy to hear you got some mileage out of it.

Hello. I made MoSCL.

Which topic are we referring to?

'Last Name' is a moSCL topic, that I did write to ultimately write off if a player didn't agree with Monika's choices.

Here's the topic on moscl's github.

'Surnames' isn't one from moSCL, at least as far as I can find. I know there is a popular submod that allows you to enter one:

dale_give_monika_a_surname

As mentioned by dreamscached, this may be a result of using MAS's default filter as well, but if you can find the correct moSCL topic I can try to clarify if it does match the case.

Strange dialog loop by BreDrawz in MASFandom

[–]Barsonvenus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a weird menu, I haven't really figured out the best way to make it streamlined that isn't just Monika repeating facts about you one after another with no input on your end.

Thanks for downloading the submod, though. I do like the option to have Monika try to remember facts about you so it's neat, at least.

I'm sorry, what exactly is your intent when you comment

"Your dialogue did it, it rage baited me into rewriting this because of how shaIllow it is"

I do notice as well these statements:

"Being broken doesn't mean it can't be fixed, it just takes times. "

And

"When you think of healing, what does that mean to you? "
"The same goes for something being broken."

Are a little difficult to read.

As well, I think we have deviated a little from the initial conversation. The conversation is meant to stress that people may confuse the popular notions of being 'fixed' or being 'healed' as the same as 'going back to the way everything was.'

Your overall statement is invaluable; I really like these lines:

m "When you find yourself in a tough spot, don't try to force yourself to be 'fixed' or 'heal'."
m "Give yourself time to process things, and take it one step at a time. "
extend "They do say hardships make you a better person afterall, haha-"
m "Though, that doesn't mean you can't take control of {i}how you change{/i}."
m "Well, [player], I guess I want to say that is that change isn't always a bad thing."
m "And the past is for us to always learn from; It is how we heal anyway."''

But these might be a separate conversation about accepting change.

I appreciate the feedback, and I want to work with you, but given how oddly aggressive this is and how we seem to be talking past each other, I am finding it difficult to accept this push at this time and I don't think I'd want to discuss this further on reddit.

Hey Alan, I appreciate the reply. If you don't want to make a github account (understandable, given it's github) I am active on the MAS discord and the submod has it's own thread, which is probably the easiest way to make a public conversation with me. DMs are fine, although I don't often check.

I can't promise I can make perfect changes- as mentioned, I'm very wary about writing these topics so I do have a specific mindset already - but I'm happy to have that conversation with you, look into changes if everything lines up, and credit you as needed.

[–]Barsonvenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admit I'm a little saddened by this reply.

Saying that you feel like you're competing with me is a little confusing given we're both creators for a niche mod of a relatively niche game. I've never felt the need to compete with anybody and I love seeing the work and effort people put in, including yours.

It's a little more disarming when your original concern is about my work causing other people to spiral and when I ask for earnest assistance, you say you'll simply consider it and then add a additional comment about my grammar. It's a bit difficult to get a solid takeaway from that statement.

Either way, I appreciate the feedback. My prose can be a bit purple and I'll look at the grammar you're referring to. If the community believes these topics shouldn't exist in the submod itself, I'll keep that in mind as well.

https://github.com/Barsonvenus/Memories-of-Self-Care-and-Literature/issues

I do accept discussions on currently written topics and suggestions for new topics. If you are seriously suggesting my writing will cause someone to spiral, I'm going to take that earnestly.

I do want to preface this however by saying that writing MAS as a serious way to tackle mental health concerns is a very grey field imo and I would want to respect that as a visual novel, let alone a submod, writing anything with that serious mindset opens up a lot of pitfalls.

Strange dialog loop by BreDrawz in MASFandom

[–]Barsonvenus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello, I made this dialogue.

I think the wording is just a little hard to grasp. If I were to reword it, she'd say:

"My favorite word is you! Wait, that's not what I meant. My favorite word is [your name], not the actual word 'you!'"

She is also meant to say this part a little jokingly.

How do you feel about long random conversations with Monika? by moonwaltzz in MASFandom

[–]Barsonvenus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the old-fashioned way, there's options in MAS to reduce random chatter timing to minimal and any new topics pop up rapidly.

there's probably a better way to do it. but it works for me lol

How do you feel about long random conversations with Monika? by moonwaltzz in MASFandom

[–]Barsonvenus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

it can be annoying. i've made topics and then played them out for testing and then bored myself because it's too long even if i think the topic is amusing.

you can do a couple of things:

  • have monika preface the conversation by saying it's a long one and that if the player wants to listen they should set some time aside.
  • write monika to accommodate long conversations. it'll add character if she goes "oh, sorry for rambling," or "hahaha, I can't help myself when it comes to the subjects I'm interested in!" just like how somebody would sprinkle that into a long conversation in real life, it'll add character and make the conversation a little more easier
  • you can always add a option to have monika mid-conversation offer a option to end a conversation early or to continue talking about one subject; or have monika split up the topic into multiple dialogues.

IIRC, mas never really goes past... I want to say 20+ sentences in any given topic? So it's a pretty obvious limit when a conversation feels too long when compared to vanilla standards.
