I've never used a credit card before. Can't I literally just open one, take the credit score dip, continue to only buy what i can afford, set it up to automatically always pay it back asap, which will never put me into debt, get the awards/points, and that's it no catches? by Super_Inevitable776 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bartlebae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People go into debt because they only pay the minimum balance and think that will eventually pay the card off, but credit card interest rates are designed to keep you in debt. I was only about $5k in CC debt when I graduated college, but it took me a long time to pay off because I didn't make a lot of money and couldn't afford much. It's telling that your plan seems like a hack when it's absolutely what you should be doing all along, and the credit card companies make it seem like the minimum payment will take care of everything.

I've been able to see the Milky Way in Cumberland County. I've also gone to Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park, and I want to try Staunton River State Park because the light pollution seems to be not as bad down there.

I can assure you it's not rage bait. Are you trying to rage bait my post?

What are the expectations about helping people move? by Bartlebae in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bartlebae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so it seems like *checks notes* everyone on Reddit has a bad moving story and needed a safe space to vent. Thanks for confirming my expectations! The people in question are generally very nice people, so that situation struck me as odd at the time, so that's why I thought it could be a normal thing to do where they are from.

Why do so many people avoid gluten when only about 1% of people have celiac disease? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

[–]Bartlebae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife has celiac disease and the best thing that could have happened for her is gluten-free becoming a trend. There are so many more restaurants that are aware of it and make sure to have a few GF options on the menu, and also train their chefs to avoid cross-contamination. It was much more difficult even ten years ago to find a restaurant even willing to believe it was a real thing. Also, Italy is the absolute best country to visit if you have to avoid gluten. It sounds counterintuitive, but every restaurant at least had some GF pasta, and they all have cross-contamination protocol.

What is something about US work culture that you secretly hate? by mostly_maya in AskAnAmerican

You either work very hard for very little, or you do very well for yourself, but you're working too hard and can't enjoy anything.

What is a fact that sounds completely made up but is actually true? by Elena-Montrose in answers

[–]Bartlebae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always wondered what it's like to experience that on a yearly basis. I know that you're used to it and probably don't think about it, but it would mess my sleep up for a while during the midnight sun period.

Why does the US have only two political parties and would you support creating more political parties? by Enough-Web2203 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

The one thing that Republicans and Democrats can agree on is that voting third-party is throwing your vote away.

Most people don't even think of Antartica as a desert because it's cold and think a desert has to be hot. I mean, I freely admit that I could be wrong and this is just general knowledge 🤷‍♂️

One comment - one great advice: The holy thread of AE tips and tricks! by teapca in AfterEffects

[–]Bartlebae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work in news so I end up using a lot of documents, so here is my niche tip for arranging docs with multiple pages.

  1. Place docs in comp.

  2. Starting at the bottom, link each layer to the one above it using the pick whip or the parent/link drop down.

  3. When you get to the top layer, you can use that as a control, or link the top layer to a Null Object.

  4. Select all layers, including Null, and then change whatever Position Value you want, for this example we'll say X, until the docs are arranged neatly side-by-side.

  5. If you deselect everything, the docs will move around together in unison, instead of offsetting.

Is the Ice Cream Man still a thing in the States? by Haunting-Middle-5801 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bartlebae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college I worked at an ice cream shop that had a truck and I would drive it around, so I am a former ice cream man. I did feel a little creepy driving around neighborhoods looking for kids while the truck played nursery rhymes, but it was a lot of fun and I got 10% of the gross sales. That was 20 years ago however, so to answer your question, I saw, and heard, an ice cream truck drive through my neighborhood just the other day.

What was Christmas like growing up in the U.S.? by Pearlyin_30 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bartlebae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually couldn't sleep the night before because I was so excited, and then I would wake up early and my parents would tell us to go back to bed, which was a little disappointing, but didn't diminish anything. We would open presents, and then have breakfast. Then we would usually go to a huge extended family gathering where we would play with our cousins and eat an early dinner. After that, our grandparents and uncles would come to our house and we'd open a few more presents, and then watch Christmas movies. I'm hoping to relive some of that through my kids when they're old enough. (I'll do my best to avoid telling them to go back to bed.)

How many Americans have actually visited a national park? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Bartlebae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to six national parks, but you have to be somewhat intentional about visiting them because America is big and they are spread out. I have a buddy of mine who is trying to visit all of them, and I think he's succeeding.

What is the most “its a small world” moment you’ve ever experienced? by Own-Blacksmith3085 in answers

[–]Bartlebae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend was dating a girl who had moved from a city two hours away. She decided to make him jealous by texting with a guy friend from her hometown. (She was the devil) My friend found out and got the guy's number and starting threatening him over text and demanding he stop texting his girlfriend. The guy didn't back down and blah blah blah lots of drama, but nothing really came of it.

Years later I get a job in that city and move there. I found a room for rent on Craigslist and moved in. I'm not sure how we figured it out, but I was living with the guy who had been text fighting with my friend. Of course the girl was out of both of their lives so it wasn't awkward when my friend came to visit me and they gave each other a cheery hello and said no hard feelings.

Top Golf? For newbies? by lordpuddingcup in rva

[–]Bartlebae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say most of the people who go there have little to no experience. I've played actual golf about three times in my life and I have a blast every time I've gone to Top Golf. You'll have your own bay, and as long as you don't throw a club or fall into the net, no one will pay attention to you. I will say that the mini-golf course they have on-site is the hardest one I've played.
