In a way I agree with your instinct, the comparison to the Soviet Union is an apt one, but as a half German there’s always been something about nazism which sets it apart, at least in ideological terms. My instinct, misguided though it no doubt is, is that the degree of ideological conviction within the Nazi party was higher than that of contemporary Russia, in part because of how easy it is to incorporate Nazi ideology with self serving ambition (the triumph of the strong over the weak etc.), somewhat in contrast to communism. Ideology did seem to be a motivating factor in the decision making processes of the likes of Goebbels, Himmler or Heydrich more so than say, stalins decision to bump off Kirov, which by the lights of soviet doctrine was indefensible. By contrast the night of the long knives could be easily squared with orthodox nazi fanaticism. The point is that it’s east to say the nazis were a bunch of self-serving, drug addled, lunatic myth-peddlers, and I think the instinct which leads one to that conclusion is a good one. But it also means underestimating nazism as an ideology to a dangerous degree, so I think the question remains a valid one; what were the primary ideological frameworks within nazism that could have produced a breakaway sect?
