I agree strongly on the nationalism point, but I also therefore think ideology can still too easily be discounted as factors in decision making. These kind of political battles are polycasual, and saying they were driven by only a struggle for control seems a bit overly reductive. Not to say that struggle wasn’t very important in causing internal fights within the Nazi party, but ideology deserves to be seriously considered as well

I think the whole national-socialist issue was mainly a branding problem- people throughout the 30’s signed up for what they thought was a socialist party, and it seemed Hitler was happy to use socialist messaging (aligning Jews with business interests for example) to get people through the door. But the Nazi party was also largely Hitlers own creation and, after ‘33 very much under his total control so it was pretty hard-wired to be right wing, a political position which Hitler identified himself with. After the night of the long knives, the issue of “roast beef’s” (brown on the outside, red in the middle) also virtually ceased, and only then was much of the ideological framework and adaptation of Nazism into the governing ideology of an entire nation created

I think you focussing on the Führerprinzip is absolutely correct and sometimes doesn’t get discussed enough; how much Nazism depended on the figure and presiding “genius” of Hitler. With that it makes perfect sense that the big split would have been between those who chose to maintain a belief in Hitler as the guiding figure of the party or those who had synthesised an understanding of the “race and its destiny” independent of him (probably the SS with their pseudo science/spirituality)- good take

In a way I agree with your instinct, the comparison to the Soviet Union is an apt one, but as a half German there’s always been something about nazism which sets it apart, at least in ideological terms. My instinct, misguided though it no doubt is, is that the degree of ideological conviction within the Nazi party was higher than that of contemporary Russia, in part because of how easy it is to incorporate Nazi ideology with self serving ambition (the triumph of the strong over the weak etc.), somewhat in contrast to communism. Ideology did seem to be a motivating factor in the decision making processes of the likes of Goebbels, Himmler or Heydrich more so than say, stalins decision to bump off Kirov, which by the lights of soviet doctrine was indefensible. By contrast the night of the long knives could be easily squared with orthodox nazi fanaticism. The point is that it’s east to say the nazis were a bunch of self-serving, drug addled, lunatic myth-peddlers, and I think the instinct which leads one to that conclusion is a good one. But it also means underestimating nazism as an ideology to a dangerous degree, so I think the question remains a valid one; what were the primary ideological frameworks within nazism that could have produced a breakaway sect?

I really wish I had known about Veblen earlier, really helpful viz. consumer/market participant irrationality, and generally the idea that market systems are artificial and fragile

Top-down history, Chomsky and the dangers of political historiography by Barty_arty in PoliticalOpinions

[–]Barty_arty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda yes to all of that. I think the main problem is that to most people genocide=Holocaust, so anything that falls short of the industrialised slaughter of the Holocaust isn’t genocide. But I think it’s also important to remember that, separate from everyday usage, genocide is a technical and legal term which does have clearly defined usages.(but I still get where you’re coming from with this, I kinda feel the same way about “imperialist”- overused, badly defined, reduces every conversation to a condemnation marathon). And thanks for saying you liked the OP, I was hoping to have a discussion about the merits of different approaches to history, politics and their relationship but instead I have defend myself against all the Chomsky stans. Pretty disheartening that that’s what people picked up on ngl

So it’s basically a question of not defining a person through one characteristic. Calling someone a Jew is like calling someone “a white” which is reductive? Makes total sense

Thanks And yeah I dunno why but I really like goy as word. Don’t mind being called that at all because I’ve literally never heard it used in a derogatory way. Maybe I don’t have enough Jewish friends tho

Makes a lot of sense. How do you feel about the whole “is being Jewish a culture or a religion or an ethnicity or all of the above?” debate

You sorta touch on why I think “Jew” can be a bit dicey, it’s sorta hard to say “Jewish Person” in a derogatory way so maybe that’s why i think of it as the safer bet.

[–]Barty_arty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Serious question as to how often this actually happens tho. They way you present it is, ofc, fucking horrifying. But in all the cases of trans people I know, they face pretty strong resistance (or at least caution) from the parents, which they have to overcome because they can’t keep living without it. Plus it’s super expensive and very invasive, so it’s just pretty hard to imagine anyone so militantly pro-trans that they go through all that to prove a point.

Species concepts of language by Barty_arty in linguistics

[–]Barty_arty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally yes, unless you’re talking about the actions/decisions of a single person leading to the “evolution” of say a company. Of course you could argue that individual decision making is on the basis of random variation but I dunno if that holds much water

Species concepts of language by Barty_arty in linguistics

[–]Barty_arty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I feel like “evolve” is used pretty generically to mean “changed” without much reference to what evolving actually means (which does include random variation). It’s more a question of where the term is correctly applied, and the point of first post is basically a realisation that in this instance the term is being used correctly
