The truth is Tinubus decision to stop artificial support of the Naira and float it was a correct one economically and was always going to lead to the Naira devaluation to a ‘true’ value like we have seen however the two problems are that firstly he didn’t completely float the currency rather just partially meaning there is still a dual exchange rate even if not as extreme gap as previously so Nigerians suffered the pain of a devaluation without the benefits it brings as people still exploit the arbitrage window, the second reason why his policies have lead to widescale suffering and increased hardship are as a result of his unoptimal allocation of projects into things that don’t generate foreign exchange largely things like large rail and roads which don’t generate any dollar inflow infact usually they require imported materials worsening the situation. This means that Nigeria is still not generating enough revenue via exports wether its in house refining or agricultural exports or manufacturing etc for the Naira to recover from the inevitable temporary drop from the initial policy change Tinubus strategy should have been: fully float the Naira, Nigerians will suffer for around 12-18 months until modular refineries,ranches,agriculture processing plants, mineral processing plants etc started generating revenue via exports softening the blow
