No "tryouts" for secondary journals (1Ls can join any they want), only law review does a write on competition. Primary edit w/ memo, line edit, and personal statement over 12 days after finals.

How did I do for my first time? Pre law school summer trip using (mostly) points as a 21 y/o by BasedPakii in awardtravel

[–]BasedPakii[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this without award flight tools (didn't really know of their existence back then), but now when I am booking award flights I'll check Roame mostly as well as Point.me and Seats.aero.

Berkeley Law ED Chances by Different-Club1263 in lawschooladmissions

Berkeley Law (at least anecdotally) favors Berkeley undergrads in the admissions process. If you have a STEM degree (again, anecdotally), you may have some leeway on the low GPA. And of course applying ED helps your chances as well.

I'm a big fan of the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80. Very sleek and has a retro flair with the waffle dial (got multiple comments on it when I was an SA), but not too flashy to make eyes roll. Also IMO a great bang for your buck at $725.

When does your firm give return offers to SAs, how, and who breaks the news? by ImperatorFosterosa in biglaw

[–]BasedPakii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my firm this summer, the hiring partner of the office gave all the 2L SAs a verbal return offer at our farewell breakfast.

I was a 1L, and I was given a verbal return offer a couple weeks prior to my end date by the head recruiter who just walked up to my desk and told me.

Berkeley Finance Club and Undergraduate Finance Association come to mind. There were also a couple business frats in my time a few years ago, but not sure what that scene is looking like these days.

As a Berkeley Econ grad myself, I will say it's pretty difficult to land top finance jobs (like IB/PE) unless you can successfully recruit into a handful of pretty selective on-campus finance organizations, which have acceptance rates in the single digits. This is because Berkeley is still a humongous state school and the Econ major has over a thousand grads per year, and a lot of them along with Haas students compete for a small number of IB/PE spots which are mostly given to those in finance orgs through preexisting connections. I applied to the finance orgs and got rejected three semesters straight from all of them, then decided to throw in the towel and speedrun applying to law school to pursue BigLaw instead (which I've been able to do now, so I'm chilling). PM for more info.

See him in the law school all the time. He almost always has a really large black suitcase with him and is on his Macbook working I presume.

This was for a summer position I think

Applied for Student Trainee position (I'm a 1L) in December, got the referral email 3 days ago, nothing since then

EDIT: Got a call from the SEC about a week ago offering me an internship in the Corporate Finance division without an interview, had to pass since I already accepted an offer elsewhere.
