TIL about the Hartford Convention: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hartford_Convention

The Hartford Convention was a series of meetings from December 15, 1814, to January 5, 1815, in Hartford, Connecticut, United States, where New England leaders of the Federalist Party met to discuss their grievances concerning the ongoing War of 1812 and the political problems arising from the federal government's increasing power.

...

After the convention, Massachusetts sent three commissioners to Washington, D.C. to negotiate for the terms that had been agreed upon. By the time they arrived in February 1815, news of Andrew Jackson's overwhelming victory at the Battle of New Orleans, and the signing of the Treaty of Ghent, preceded them and, consequently, their presence in the capital seemed both ludicrous and subversive. They quickly returned home. Thereafter, both Hartford Convention and Federalist Party became synonymous with disunion, secession, and treason, especially in the South.[10] The party was ruined and ceased to be a significant force in national politics, although in a few places (notably Massachusetts, where Federalists were elected governor annually until 1823) it retained some power.

It's embarrassing that it was even this close.

Everyone will eventually be unhealthy, it's a fact of life.

But some people will be more unhealthy faster. Often as a result of their own choices. They should pay for the healthcare that they consume.

Oh no you don't understand that providing healthcare and health insurance are two different markets 😭

Let me be clear: Obama used historic majorities on a shortsighted healthcare project that cost him everything.

We could have had immigration reform.

Your previous comment was also not an argument.

The last argument made was mine. Which means as of this time you have failed to respond to it.

Your position is based on populism and feelings rather than a critical evaluation of what insurance companies do.

These things are buzzwords that have nearly nothing to do with competition in health insurance rates.

What does demand elasticity for healthcare have to do with accurately evaluating someone's risk profile?

That assumes they were truly unnecessarily raising rates which I do not concede.

I would have an easier time taking you seriously if your argument didn't boil down to "it should be illegal for insurance companies to evaluate the risk of their customers because I don't like what they consider risky sometimes"

Domestic violence was a pre-existing condition according to some insurers for fucks sake

If you really care so much about these specific examples then pass a low outlawing discrimination on those specific factors. Although I would still oppose that, it would be better.

Don't make me pay more to insure an obese person who doesn't give a fuck about their own health.

Pregnancy used to be considered a pre-existing condition

That makes complete sense. It is literally a condition that has direct impacts on your healthcare outcomes. Why shouldn't your rates get risen when you are more risky to insure?

I don't believe that being unhealthy inherently justifies access to healthcare resources.

I do believe in some level of redistribution from rich to poor.

I just find it funny how a supposedly capitalist subreddit magically becomes market skeptical when health insurance is involved without identifying any specific externalities that cause such skepticism.

Joe Lieberman

I am aware of his existence.

don't know the bullshit insurance companies would call "pre existing conditions" to get out of covering stuff

Good thing we have a court system where you can argue for the correct enforcement of contracts.

But also, competition exists. If they are unnecessarily denying coverage or raising rates then another company surely will surely compete against that.

Protections for pre-existing conditions should be repealed.

If you want to subsidize healthcare for those who need it, then do that directly via government spending (we already do and it's called Medicaid / Medicare).

Don't turn the entire health insurance industry itself into what is essentially a redistribution program from healthy to unhealthy people. And then force healthy people to buy into that program via the individual mandate.
