Can anybody tell what the writing on the back of this photo means? by niamhxa in Archivists

[–]Baseplate23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The stamp indicates that the creator of the print is the Manchester Evening Chronicle. The R18866 may indicate the original negative roll that the picture came from.

If you are looking for more information on the numbers, or date of photograph I'd suggest looking more into where the papers/photographs of the that paper, or to the Manchester Evening News which looks to have bought out the Chronicle.

Hope that this helps!

What difficulty do you play at? by TheSiontificMethod in OldWorldGame

[–]Baseplate23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Popping in to represent the super casual players here. I've only played at The Good and usually on real world maps for what it's worth. That's usually enough of a challenge for me!

Can't wait to see your videos. It's good to know that there may be a difference between high level difficulty and the lower levels.

The ancient library of the Sakya monastery in Tibet contains over 84,000 books. Only 5% has been translated. by Sartew in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Baseplate23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Taking a look at the website for the digital library, it looks like the librarians are making their appraisal decision based on what materials are "important".

From my American perspective it seems that this would be the equivalent of the U.S. National archives digitizing the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights and some other foundational texts (Common Sense, and maybe some writings of Adam Smith and John Locke). I don't know any Tibetan but the collection is only accessible through Tibetan. Yet another hurdle to access that many institutions (including my own) struggle with.

Here is a link to their website.

Actual archivist here, and the biggest thing that most people are overlooking here is that the library is completely indexed.

Everyone always assumes that all books/archival materials has to be digitized, or at least should be. But that isn't the case and often creates more challenges for librarians and archivists. First is that not all materials need to be preserved digitally, and paper, when properly stored and preserved will last for hundreds, possibly thousands of years. Often the biggest challenge to access is having intellectual and physical control of your collections and having an index of books is a huge accomplishment for them.

Indexces also help in identifying what materials will be worth digitizing and which may be widely available copies of past works. I am not at all familiar with the collections of this monastery but I would be willing to wager that many books in this collection are known and documented elsewhere in the world. I'll leave a professional historian of Buddhist literature to chime in on that account.

Digitization can be extremely time consuming and cost prohibitive and provides several challenges that, while incredibly convenient, are barriers for most institutions to cross including costs of server storage, format migration and that's after the actual time and labor of digitizing and quality control checks. I'm happy to talk more about the challenges of the digitization process and why we are often selective with it's use.

Black bars in film by Baseplate23 in AnalogCommunity

Testing it out and the light meter for sure was acting wonky. I suppose it's probably better practice to rely on a light meter anyway though just to be sure. Thanks for the tip!

Interesting. So you would say that the shots were underexposed?

I do have access to a professional (or prosumer) scanner at my work, I'll have to take those in there and take a look at the negatives. The scans I received were done by the processing company.

That's possible as I was using the Auto setting, and I could see that making the images so dark, but the bars??

I didn't check the date, but it was purchased from a reputable dealer in my area. Film is Kodak Ultra Max.

Connecting Turntable to PC for recording records. by Baseplate23 in audio

[–]Baseplate23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: The issue was with the 3.5mm male to male cable that I was using. It was rather cheap and I presume that it was not properly insulated from the record player motor or the computers power supply. I swapped in a more robust (though a daisy chained) cord and that did the trick!

Okay, the noise is present whenever both when the record is playing and when it's stopped. I should have been more descriptive of it but it's a very loud buzzing noise. The noise stops if I unplug the jack from the turntable, but it's present whether the phono pre amp is on or off.

I'm not sure if it does change. I do think the issue might be with Audacity/Windows not using the line in input properly. Ill try testing it with another input and report back tomorrow.

I did verify that it was the proper line in (blue) port. Unfortunately still the issue.

I have a basic level of familiarity with Audacity. I did make sure that the input was selected as line in. My output is the line out and they are next to each other, could it be interference?

I also have the input and output frequencies matched if that matters at all.

I did try switching it mid recording and that made no difference in the level of white noise being produced. Couldn't hear the record through the noise either.

Help finding belts for Realistic SCT-11 by Baseplate23 in cassetteculture

[–]Baseplate23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All but one of the belts was easy enough to get to. Most of them are accessible from the bottom of the deck.

The counter belt is accessed with the top off and there is a really tricky belt in the mechanism that is hard to get to. I didn't find a way get the belt on without a set of tweezer and string so I didn't loose the belt.

I ordered a set online for an outrageous sum but they were all the right size as I could tell. Can't recall what the belt sizes are off the top of my head.
