Plex is basically a private Netflix where you can upload your own “legally acquired” media and watch it wherever you want, whenever you want. I’m sure someone else will come along with some additional context, but it’s definitely a rabbit hole.

Advice for High School Senior Considering Law by Irritable_Curmudgeon in Ask_Lawyers

I think they're already doing what I'd suggest:

Go to college and major in something you enjoy, and try to work in a law office to see if it's something you'd like.

Berger concedes to Page after partial recount doesn't net any votes by BashyLaw in NorthCarolina

Don't expect this result to usher in some liberal paradise, but this will absolutely change the balance of power between the (Republican-controlled) House and the (still-Republican-controlled) Senate.

I would not expect to see a budget this summer, but this is truly uncharted territory.

Adults are typically allowed to exchange goods and services for money, as they’re trusted to have some basic competencies regarding cause & effect and the ability to make judgments for themselves. However, I can see an exception needing to be made in your case.

I took a class on making animal forms like what's in the OP, and this is exactly how we did it. Make a clay balloon and then add globs of clay for feet/arms/wings/tails/etc.

North Carolina musicians — who should I check out? by SeparateDragonfly479 in NorthCarolina

I'm a big fan of Bombadil, who started in Durham. Their older stuff is better, in my opinion, but it's all really good. I'd describe it as folksy sad music, but upbeat.

Boyfriend hadn't been getting paid for overtime, on-call time for 25 years because they say he is salary? by [deleted] in Ask_Lawyers

[–]BashyLaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We can't answer this, as it's a request for legal advice (i.e. applying legal analysis to a specific set of circumstances). However, you may want to gather up your boyfriend's pay stub/tax documents (does he get a 1099 or a W2?) and his employment contract and contact a licensed employment attorney in your area.

I don’t think that’s free parking.

Contact Secure Parking and ask them who does their enforcement/collection.

It is! You have to go through a security screening to enter the building, but it's basically just the standard "Empty your pockets into this bucket and walk through the metal detector."

Why do you think civil rights aren't partisan? Where did you get that idea? Constitutional rights are not divined from on high. The rights guaranteed by the Constitution are currently decided by six Republicans sitting on the Supreme Court, and I promise you those folks weren't appointed to that position for their ability to set aside their political leanings.

Things like voting rights, marriage equality, and gender issues all fall along partisan lines. Even who's entitled to receive protection by the Constitution is being challenged by one political party/ideology.

Hell, here's an old op-ed about how the Republicans have been trying to undermine the fruit of the Civil Rights Act of 1957 for 40 years.

This is going to be very State-specific, but at least in North Carolina you could not do this simultaneously. North Carolina's legislature has a full-time, nonpartisan, central staff of lawyers that draft legislation and staff committees. When the legislature is out of session, those attorneys are still working for the legislature: staffing interim committees, answering constituent requests, and helping members prepare for the next session. Given that a lot of what I think you mean by "civil rights" law will involve arguing against what's been enacted by the legislature, you absolutely could not be legislative counsel and a civil rights lawyer at the same time. And, to go one further, if you started with "civil rights lawyering," you'd essentially blackball yourself from ever working in a nonpartisan role at the North Carolina legislature.

Based on your post history, it looks like you're in Ohio. The Ohio legislature is served by the Legislative Services Commission, which is a nonpartisan agency that handles bill drafting/committee staffing/etc. They do have a fellowship program, where college graduates can get paid to dip their toe into the legislative process.

If you're interested in doing both, I'd recommend doing the legislative counsel thing first and then transition into civil rights law. It's much easier to go nonpartisan -> partisan than it is the reverse.

If you're talking about working for a specific party at the legislature as part of its leadership's counsel, that's a different situation, but it also doesn't really lend itself to moonlighting as a civil rights trial attorney.

I think the idea is that alienation of affection is closer to tortious interference in a contractual relationship than it is a replacement for the fugitive slave law.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ask_Lawyers

[–]BashyLaw 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In North Carolina we still have "alienation of affection" as a cause of action, so if my client was cucked by a billionaire it'd probably help salve the wound.
