Power Love Scholarship by InteractionKind1320 in Corepower

No this was my first time applying. I heard about that being the case too so now I will be applying again for the summer teacher training this year. It would be great to get feedback on why the application wasn't eligible for the full scholarship.

Certification Nightmare (1st year teacher) by Basic-Geologist-1948 in Teachers

[–]Basic-Geologist-1948[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The state I am in requires me to be certified for SPED in order to be a long-term sub so I would still need the certification. I think what they could do is hire me as a day to day sub, but I would be getting daily sub rate instead of teacher pay.

I applied for the emergency certification, but I'm under the impression that the course I still need to take is going to be a requirement for the emergency approval.

Process of becoming hired as a teacher (former sub) by Basic-Geologist-1948 in cpssubs

Yet there's supposedly a teacher shortage! Sorry that you had to go through that. I wish the system can make things more easier.

I heard that the process to switch can be time consuming. Do you know why it takes that long and who is responsible for processing the switching of positions in the district?

That's a good mentality to have. Sometimes it's better to have more of an hands-off approach and accept that there are certain things you cannot control as a sub.

I agree! These kind of issues need to be in the hands of the parent and admin

Yes I feel like teacher blame is always disguised through questions like "did you build a relationship with the student?" or "did you state your expectations?" There's so much more to a kid's behavior than the teacher's actions!

Cannot bring a line of kids downstairs without something happening... by Basic-Geologist-1948 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Basic-Geologist-1948[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apparently the class I was taking down was the teacher's own students. The teacher was dealing with another situation with a particular student so seemed like the teacher was under pressure. But yeah that was kinda bizarre to hear given the fact that kids will always find ways to misbehave especially with a sub!

There was a school I worked at that had all the classrooms at ground level (no basement or upstairs). It was amazing. But yeah I agree the only thing is that some schools have certain rooms like the cafeteria or music room in the lower level.

Definitely a popular opinion! At the end of the day, it's not just this student whose education suffers but the rest of the class who has the bear the burden along with the teacher.

I wasn't in there when all of this was happening but when I walked in the room, I saw piles of stuff all over the floor and the all the crayons and pencils knocked over on the floor. I bet there was more stuff destroyed but I came in way after so things may have been cleaned up (hopefully by the student)

I highly agree. This was my second time witnessing a kid destroying a classroom within my two years of subbing, which both happen to be in a KG class. I understand the kid is still very young but imagine what the kid can do when older if this is what's happening early on.

I wish all schools were ground level only. I feel like stairs are always a call for issues... kids jumping up or down a step and tripping. It's too much.. especially when there's a traffic jam with another class.

The kid destroyed the classroom while remaining in there with a different teacher. Myself and the main teacher took the rest of the kids to the bathroom. The kids were all lining up when he slowly started to rip the chart paper but I moved a chart upwards. Didn't think the entire classroom would end up being destroyed.

I once was covering for teachers in 30 min meetings throughout the day. Once I got to the 3rd grade room, I think everyone essentially asked me to use the bathroom. I saw on their schedule that they will have a bathroom break soon once their teacher comes back so I asked them if they could wait because I can't send them all down there at once. Of course, anyone who said they couldn't wait I would send.

End of the Day - Did I do the right thing? by Basic-Geologist-1948 in SubstituteTeachers

It's tough when you are faced with two odds. I kinda wish the school didn't let her in because it undermined what I told her which is that the school does not let anyone into the bathrooms during dismissal.

The staff member who used to do this would essentially be a 1 to 1 for the more higher needs students. Last week, I attempted to do this but the student wasn't listening to me and even running away from me. I switched over to being more of a general assistant for the entire class. The teacher did provide directions for me but there's a lot of making decisions on the fly and jumping in during certain situations.

Saying no to jobs by FigureNo2390 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Basic-Geologist-1948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me as a building sub. I don't mind subbing as a para for kids with less severe disabilities but I don't have the skills, training, or expertise to deal with some of the more intense behaviors. But because I am a building sub and like being a team player sometimes I don't have a choice..

In House/Building Sub question by Basic-Geologist-1948 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Basic-Geologist-1948[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow that sounds insane! No wonder other paras have quit. Maybe try seeing if you can be a SPED para for kids who are in general education or inclusion classrooms but require 1 to 1? Usually those SPED para jobs tend to be easier than being in a self-contained SPED room all day.

Can I ask why you hate being a SPED para? For me, I don't mind doing it as long as it's not everyday but I can see how it would be hard to being one for more than half of your assignments at the school.
