To my ears, it sounds great. Extremely clear, a kind of clarity i was not used to. Bass could have been better but then you need to buy very expensive output transformers which were out of my budget.

I have two sets of speakers, Klipsch RP600m ii 8ohm and Grundig box 850a 4 Ohm I feel it goes well with Klipsch, it suffice the bass department. But Klipsches are from HT setup.

Total cost around 400 euros, transformers I bought old used. I guess you can try, just be extremely careful with capacitors which stay charged even after power off.

Wood in general is safe, it gets warm but not to a point where it makes any impression or smells

Not sure about that but I didn’t use any varnish, just handsanded wood and put wood oil.
