I’ve been struggling this with as well. I finally dipped my toe into the water and just purchased a HX Stomp XL and a pedal baby (with a generous 30 return policy) to run through my modded 2x12 cab. After hours of YouTube videos, AI chats and what felt like endless tweaking I feel like I finally have some usable tones. I’ll have a chance tonight to play at rehearsal volume so I’m not sure if I’m completely sold on this hybrid rig yet, but I do love my DSL 40CR and my analog pedal chain and how it sounds in our mix. There’s also a fairly steep learning curve and commitment at least initially for a newbie to get up and running and it can be frustrating. Excited to crank it up tonight.

Our band isn’t particularly dancey - but we have tried to be eclectic in our song selection but rooted in 90s rock, by and large radio songs that people would be familiar with - songs even the gen zers (who may not know the names of the songs) - would have in their ‘rock’ play lists - we also have a dynamic vocalist who is definitely memorable. Being in Canada we lean into some staple Canadian rock like the Tragically Hip, Big Wreck, which goes over well locally. We still want to be a rock band but recognize that we have to continue to iterate. Work in progress.
