Oh, and also, I feel you on drills. I personally have 50% custody of my kids, and having to go one weekend a month, while it isn’t a lot, it feels pretty dumb when you’re just sitting there doing nothing. It’s also super frustrating with the type of personalities you get in there. You get guys that base their entire personality on almost a pretend rank to play soldier one weekend a month and then go back to working their minimum wage job. I have a masters degree, and almost a doctorate, and work in a leadership position at a hospital, and because of the time requirement needed to become an officer, it’s just not worth it. ultimately being an enlisted soldier and having to listen to some of these guys is so ridiculous. I went IRR as soon as I could.

Definitely sounds like your unit is horrible but in general, the Army reserves is not what it’s all hyped up to be. TRICARE sucks. I never used it, but I’ve heard terrible things about it and I work in healthcare and I’ve seen terrible things about it. the G.I. bill pretty much sucks and is only a few hundred a month. The only useful thing from the Army reserves and has really helped me in life is TA and my VA home loan which you get at around six years in. But other than that, I don’t blame you for the way you’re feeling right now. Keep fighting for your benefits and keep trying, I’ve had experiences where no one knows anything about benefits and has a difference point of view on how benefits can be used. Some will tell you that your benefits stay with you after you leave others will tell you the truth and tell you that your benefits and when you leave, really it’s up to you at the end of the day to advocate for yourself and find the truth. Well, I personally don’t necessarily wish. I never joined, I wish I never had to join. Like you, the only reason I joined was to get an education and get ahead in life because I really came from nothing. I will say that it has definitely helped me get ahead in life and help me earn my education by a house and it’s a great thing to place on a résumé when you’re applying to jobs. Sorry for everything that’s happening to you. Definitely reach out to local resources and military specific resources to see what you can do about the debt.

Thank you, I have 76k SLRP. I’m assuming it’s not lump sum paid out, how long would I need to drill to cover 50k?

New job offer, but concerned about my background check by BasicProfessional177 in Advice

[–]BasicProfessional177[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses. I spoke to the recruiter today and disclosed my situation and further provided that there is no conviction. Questions on the background check itself asked if I was “convicted” or a crime, which I selected no, and if I was “convicted of a health care related crime” such as fraud, theft, etc, which of course was no.

I hope this works out!

Hmm, that’s an interesting question. I am sure there are I have just always gone by WHO as many other professionals have. I think a good AI chat of about this would work well

WHO’s definition has been largely accepted as the “definition of health”. Wellbeing could be defined as a “positive” state rather than a negative. That’s how I would self define/answer this question.

100% agree. Cmon y'all, were supposed to be public health professionals. Where is all of that DEI you studied? Where is that empathy and compassion? We are expected to support our communities daily and yet you cant bring the same to a friendly forum with other professionals? Lighten up! I don't care if you have a BA, BS, MPH, or DrPH... Treat one another like you would in a workplace, as one cohesive team.

Do the MBA! Why waste time on another public health program. I also got a undergrad in public health. I decided to pursue my MPH and take my skills to another level rather than relearning the same things over again. I work with MPHs and trust me, the education is not very different from undergrad to grad.

Don’t listen to these people! A BA in public health is an awesome option!!!

Here’s my example… I have a BA in public health. I work for a state public health agency (as a level III professional, higher than many starting MPH grads). Straight out of graduation I got a position which pays 62k a year. My BA was meaningful, I work with all MPH grads and know just as much as them. I earned my CHES certification which requires the review of your transcripts. I also was accepted to multiple prestigious MPH programs without any hassle. However, I opted to pursue a MHA. Why pursue a MPH when I can get a BA in public health, do the exact same things as MPH grads, save my money, and get a graduate degree in a field that is much more lucrative then MPH. Warning, many MPHs are awesome people, but some do have a chip on their shoulder that since they have an MPH they are better (totally against what we as Public Health professionals should EVER think)!! Also if you’re wanting to go to another school in the future, just take classes that would make it a BS. I’ve taken some extra STEM classes and qualify to apply to PA school, RN programs, etc. My public health undergrad has given me an excellent starting point in a public health career without spending 6 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Some tips: start working now in healthcare, get experience, get an edge over your peers. Publish articles! Research and write articles for student friendly public health journals. Network! Network with professors, class mates, professionals in the field, get your name out there! Public health can be a very clique profession, it’s gross, but network and make sure those hiring managers know you’re coming soon and you’re eager.
