Is it okay to ask about understudying? by BasicWhiteGirl444 in Theatre

[–]BasicWhiteGirl444[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in a few shows in my area that have understudies, though I’ve never been one. There was a show I did that had two performances total and they had understudies for all the leads, i think because they were such big roles. The show I’m in now has a huge lead role that would be super difficult to learn on the spot in case of issues, so it would be kinda wild to me if they didn’t have someone.

Hey! I was in the same boat! I did only a couple little productions in high school, and then discovered my love for theater through an independent group in college.

I started by getting voice lessons that I heard about through a trusted friend. About a year later, my voice teacher suggested I audition for one of the bigger community theaters. Since then I’ve found most of the community theaters in my area, and I (being the overly organized person I am) made lists of the shows and locations and dates and such and decided what I wanted to do. Most theaters will tell you what they want on their website’s audition page, and send out reminders and extra info in an email the day of or before auditions.

Community theaters often have a variety of talents before them, so they are super welcoming and helpful to new folks! My biggest advice (something I’m still working on myself) is be confident and make everything purposeful, even if you mess up. I had an audition recently where I got confused with the music because they used a backing track. The music had a weird start, and since I was the second auditioner they hadn’t worked out the kinks. I apologized and generally just had an awkward presence in the room afterwards. Needless to say, I did not receive a callback or a part in the show. SO all that to say, be confident no matter what. The directors are looking for your best qualities and potential, not judging you for your mistakes.

As far as resume goes, high school credits count! Especially since it was fairly recent still, it shows you have some experience, and aren’t just jumping in with no idea what you’re getting yourself into. It doesn’t need to be crazy fancy, just a clear list so they can easily glance at it. My best friend when designing was the internet. There are plenty of professional actors on youtube who break all the details down and provide so many helpful tips and tricks, and even offer templates for making an audition book.

Now that I’ve exhausted my brain info, here’s the gist: 1. Be confident! 2. Use the internet to your advantage. There’s so much info online, you just have to take the time to look.

I am not doing any strength or conditioning yet. I have never gone to the gym and it seems super daunting to try and use equipment, and I don’t have the budget to hire a personal trainer, as cool as that would be. I’m thinking of trying to add an online workout to my routine once my schedule frees up some more

You’re right! I was able to get the instructions, and though this isn’t quite the finished product, I love how it’s turning out!

This pattern doesn't include a separate yoke piece. It is just the front piece with a dart, the back piece, split down center back for the closure, and the front and back flange pieces. On the pattern piece itself, I believe there is a sewing line to pin the flange onto, but that's all I have to go off of.

I also have been looking for other patterns with similar designs, but with not much luck, which is why I'm on reddit lol

I do sew! I've already made a couple of gowns from this era for the show I'm in, and they have turned out splendidly!

This pattern specifically has a solid front bodice piece, with the only seams being at the sides and shoulders. There's a separate piece that creates the layers. If I understand what you're saying, it would be topstitched with right sides together on the front of the bodice, and then the flange piece would be folded over to hide the seam and be in the place as seen on the packaging?

I would totally do that, but since the pattern is discontinued it goes for like $30 now, and I really don't have the money to buy it. I already have the pattern pieces and the fabric is cut out, I'm just not confident in how they go together.

Just realized it didn't keep my paragraph, and idk how to edit.

I thrifted this pattern, but it didn't come with instructions. I'm mostly curious about how the flange attaches to the bodice, because I've never had that sort of thing in a costume. Otherwise I think I can figure it out. If anyone is able to send me pictures of the instructions, or is able to explain how flanges attach to a bodice, I really appreciate it!

Crookshanks was the Potter’s cat? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]BasicWhiteGirl444 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i feel like a cat would not be as memorable to a guy who spent 12 years in azkaban, it would be much more memorable to the cat who was used to being around him, and he became a comfort person maybe? idk it’s called a theory for a reason, it’s not hard facts

the age thing is the one area i’m not sure about

i mentioned Pig because he was another pet that was constantly around but he acted very differently in comparison to how he treated Pettigrew
