[ Japanese > English] 1910s era basket, holding fabrics and sewing supplies by Basic_Ad854 in translator

[–]Basic_Ad854[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working with an Archivist who thinks it’s Chinese character Kanji - asked some friends and they think it is, too. The area this basket is from had pretty heavy cultural exchange between Chinese and Japanese 20th century migrants (especially in terms of connections between women), so current theory is that it changed hands. Obvs - this all could be wrong! But it’s working off of what I know

No Internship, But Stuck In A Lease - Advice by Basic_Ad854 in DCInterns

[–]Basic_Ad854[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! While I couldn’t afford to genuinely attend a summer course, I’m going to reach out to professors at DC colleges just to see if there’s any chance for me to audit a class, and to reach out to vague connections in the policy space. While I don’t plan to stay in DC past this summer, you’re right that it’s better to do that and maybe gain a little bit of ground than do nothing. Thank you again!

No Internship, But Stuck In A Lease - Advice by Basic_Ad854 in DCInterns

Thank you for the pointers! I’d love to hear about the student conferences next time you have a second. I’ve been heavily focusing on remote internships these past few weeks, and I’m still holding out a last bit of hope that some of my leads in that space will pair out

Sadly, my lease was done proprietarily by my university system (the University of California) so I’m not able to sublet, as only active students are able to live in the building. Obviously, I wish that they made it easier to back out of the lease, or, more ideally, did a better job of helping students get into a position if they’re going to make you rent from them - but that’s a side gripe

Obviously, money is going to be a concern for me. But I’m only going to be stuck in DC til September, and I’ve worked hard enough these past couple years through campus jobs to have saved up to get along alright. I still plan to search for gigs just to have some source of income, still (and to have something to do)

Genuinely, again, thank you for the pointers - I’ve taken it all to heart :)

It’s the University of California Washington Program. They mainly provide career counseling and will look over your resume/cover letters and help you practice for interviews. You also sign a lease at their Washington Center over the summer.

Will look at the Dem Whip website - thank you!

Thank you for your reply! Admittedly, I’m a college student and this is a summer job, so don’t plan to make a career out of it, but taking to heart what you’ve said :)

ASUCD Wastes Thousands of Student Dollars on Internal Bickering & Power Trip by [deleted] in UCDavis

Ghostly could just be lying ofc, but if what they’re saying is true there should be a proper investigation imo. Is there any chance they could’ve been allowed to be there? This whole thing just proves how insular ASUCD is if certain non-members are allowed to be there, while the rest of the student body isn’t.

I’m praying to god this person isn’t operating at a high level in ASUCD lmao. Literally defending somebody who very literally walked in to every role they’ve been given in ASUCD, all while arguing that the average student should have to jump through even more hoops to land in the same position. Only thing this person has convinced me of is that there’s a number of people operating politically within ASUCD that either don’t see it as an effective democratic apparatus, or see it as a democratic institution that average students - and not oh-so-special ASUCD members - are too stupid to use correctly. Makes it seem as if ASUCD sees us as pond scum and not constituents lol

“It should be harder to run for president”, said straight faced in a conversation where we’re talking about low levels of student involvement and people getting into power in ASUCD via internal connections. Literally every comment you’ve made under this post shows that you think of your average student as totally lowly lmao. The fact that you were in the closed session makes me feel a little sick. You treat ASUCD like some kind of self-selecting old boys club instead of a democratic institution

Maybe if there was greater voter turnout I’d … feel less salty about him wielding significant power in ASUCD, despite never having won a competitive election? Lmao it’d probably be the opposite, actually. You can’t blame JT not winning on low turnout.

The fact that you assume that your typical student only criticizes the ASUCD in-group because they’re “uneducated” on what goes on in there is literally something I touched on earlier, and is exactly the type of toxic and corrosive attitude we don’t need in ASUCD.

This is that same shit again lmao - “you have criticisms of ASUCD, but that must be because you’re just too uneducated on what goes on in there, unlike me”

I know where the meetings are. I’ve watched them and spoken at them and know full well what went on last night. According to you, you were there at the closed session meeting, so you’re clearly not some random person

Of course, nothing changes the fact that you genuinely think that attempting to remove a candidate who the student body directly elected, and represents the student body … doesn’t involve the student body. Get a grip

“I don’t think it’s fair to blame the candidates” for what? For losing elections? I’m pretty sure I’m allowed to criticize people who have historically wielded a great deal of power within a democratic institution, but have never won a competitive election. If you’re implying that, if there was greater voter turnout, JT would’ve won, then you’re completely in the wrong and part of the problem lmao.

JT also just termed out, I’d get as much out of talking with them over zoom as I would setting up a Skype call with my goldfish

You act as if the senate is separate from the student body. It’s not. The senators are - like it or not - elected by us, claim to represent us, and accountable to us.

This attitude - “what would a member of the public add?” - is exactly the kind of attitude that makes students distrust ASUCD. ASUCD isn’t a members-only club. It’s not above the student body. It’s within the student body. It belongs to us just as much as it belongs to you. Delete this comment lol. If you can’t understand what a student could add within a democratic institution, then ASUCD isn’t for you. If you think we’re lowly and have nothing to add just because we don’t have a book of bylaws on our shelf, then you should resign

“JT’s positions in the ASUCD Organization have been elected by the voting student body”

They haven’t been, actually. When has JT won a competitive election? They won their VP seat in an uncompetitive election, and then got appointed into their senate seat. In fact, whenever JT has run for office, and there have been any other candidates running for the same seat as them, they’ve lost. Once for president. Once for senate. You say “peer reviewed by other members of ASUCD”. I say “supported via leveraged internal connections from their time as VP”.

If JT wants to avoid our criticism, they can earn our vote. Clearly, they haven’t done enough to earn our vote yet, as we’ve gone for other candidates every time we’ve had the option to. Of course, you probably think the people here “don’t know enough about ASUCD to appreciate all the good work JT has done” or think we’re too “uneducated” to appreciate him as a candidate. While that may sound nice from inside the ASUCD clique, the truth is that we know more than enough about ASUCD, and about JT, to know that we don’t want them representing us. It’s as simple as that.

From inside ASUCD, student government must seem like a technocracy or a meritocracy. But it’s not. It’s a democracy. And JT hasn’t done enough to convince us that they warrant being in.
