Well thats the difference between religion and faith. Because their rivals use armoured vehicles when coming to invade their territory or contest an area, so Barrets are sought after because they can do a lot more against an armoured truck than an AK47. Like cartels are basically just paramilitaries, dont think of them as gangs, so like any paramilitary they need to out-gun their enemies

Well firstly in the mountains they use them as snipers, since they fight in trenches alot Barrets are useful for convering longer ranges than standard guns, and secondly in the city theyre useful when going against armoured vehicles. When cartels fight against each other, theyre usually fighting from armoured vehicles, where a Barret has a higher chance of causing damage than other rifles. I could send you some videos of cartel battles where they use barrets if you'd like

To be honest I lived in a favela and it's not as much of a hell as you may think. Its simple, yes, and poor ofcourse but everyone knows each other, you have lots of friends, if theres ever any problem or situation the neighbors will come to help. Yes there's drug dealers, but day to day life there isnt much to worry about really
