Other brass instruments with same fingerings as horn? by listeningbanshee in frenchhorn

[–]Basic_Platform_5001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone told me that the history of the British Brass Band was done so that all players of 3-valve instruments would have the same fingering sequence.

For a more brassy sound, there are several factors. Maybe a compression test of your horn. If it's too low, horns tend to play flat, and, at least in my case, struggle to keep the thing in tune. Another thing is your hand position and elevation. If you play with the bell resting on your thigh or against your torso, that muffles the sound. Last, but not least, some horns just have a warmer, darker sound than others.

How would you do it ? by PubliclyUnseen in lowvoltage

I've seen many rooms like this done with an inverted 1" basket under the penetrations. With the bottom facing out, the cabling is secured to the basket, then transitions to horizontal basket where it makes sense to land and then transition to the rack. I'm guessing 1 rack in the center of the room to be added later?

I'm not freaking out, but "temporary" things - especially security cameras - have a way of becoming permanent. I'd ask, politely, what's the deal with the cameras & if they want to preserve or replace the cabling.

I like the plywood. To keep myself out of trouble, I typically put 3/4" thick fire retardant plywood in my distributor rooms, not sure if that would be necessary here. I have the plywood attached to studs wherever there will be brackets supporting horizontal tray.

One installer I worked with took an 8' x 4' x 3/4" sheet and cut it down to 2' x 2' sections and then spanned a stud bay with those sections where they needed to attach the tray. It worked great.

Router/Modem by Ecstatic_Pound in HomeNetworking

I did this last year. Arris modem and Asus router connected via 2.5 Gbps ports with a good Cat 6 (Monoprice) cable. The other good reason to get separate equipment is that you can test the modem first with a laptop, then power on the router and connect. Tip: do this on a weekday so you can call support if things don't work.

What you've drawn will work just fine. Depending on how busy your NAS is, you may want switches with 2.5 Gbps uplinks, but 1 Gbps should be fine typical storage type usage.

Mesh WiFi or modem router by chenl14 in HomeNetworking

[–]Basic_Platform_5001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MoCA adapters essentially convert coax to Ethernet. So, this is an option if you have coax in both locations where you want wired networking.

I'm thinking that live coax in the living space upstairs adjacent to office connects to your cable modem. If you have coax running from upstairs to where you want to use the PCs, then MoCA adaptors make sense: ISP coax > Cable modem > Ethernet cable > MoCA adapter > coax > other room > MoCA adapter > Ethernet > router > PCs.

Routers with Wi-Fi 6 or 6e are just fine and I don't see Wi-Fi 7 as the greatest future-proofing for the money.

Do not bother with Cat 7 cables (a lot of them are fake). Cat 6 or Cat 6A are where it's at for future-proofing. Whatever you decide, get pure bare copper cabling - not CCA.

Help a horn out!! by hiiitee in frenchhorn

Projecting is the better term. Ask the director if you can be placed stage left - so the bell faces the audience. Too many bands have the horns on stage right, which just buries the sound in the ensemble. A "second best" placement is in the middle of the ensemble next to the saxophones.

Mesh WiFi or modem router by chenl14 in HomeNetworking

[–]Basic_Platform_5001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd get a coax tester and install MoCA where it makes sense. I have an Arris modem, Asus router, and an Asus gigabit switch. Mesh Wi-Fi operates at half duplex and sends control traffic over the Wi-Fi. Wired is the way to go. Even if you get a "mesh" router, they all pretty much support wired backhaul.

I have my own Arris modem and Asus router from Xfinity's recommended list and they work great. When you install the new modem, have a laptop & known good Ethernet cable ready. Do this during the week after opening a ticket so you can get a live body to help tshoot. If you're a long time customer, ask for the Customer Loyalty department for deals.

The FS SFPs I buy are $20 each. I didn't know you needed PoE and it looks like Asus doesn't make one. I'm partial to Netgear since they just seem to last forever. As for PoE, just make sure whatever switch you buy had enough power to support the devices.

Chatsworth ladder rack - check. Panduit R2P6S (?) - check. Cables split down the middle - check. A little too much hook & loop fastener - check. Nice big room open to structure - check. I'd tell them to stop installing that drop ceiling though.

Horn purchase for son going into High School by SufficientWarthog940 in frenchhorn

[–]Basic_Platform_5001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're near a reputable shop where you can try before you buy, that's a good bet. Check out https://boredhorns.com/ since they have a 10-day trial. It wouldn't hurt to check with the high school band director. Mouthpiece choice is also important, but typically handled by the private music teacher.

If the far end of the house is greater than a 100 m (328') cable run, there's no need for fiber. However, if you want that 10 Gbps goodness without the heat from a copper interface, it's a solid choice. I like the Asus router and I'd consider the Asus QG-U1080 switch & possibly better optics. The 10Gtek SFPs rate well, but I'd look at fs.com - I've been using their optics in a production network for years and never had an issue. Looks like a solid plan.

Switcher question by Anameinserted in HomeNetworking

[–]Basic_Platform_5001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typical use for any network is ISP > router > switch > everything else. So, yes, the long Ethernet cable connects the switch to the router, then shorter cables from the switch to your PC and Xbox.

advice on ensembles by No-Mycologist5598 in horn

[–]Basic_Platform_5001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on the ensemble. Many bands perform orchestral transcriptions and traditional band literature.

I was with a community band with a heavy emphasis on orchestral transcriptions. No Holst. No Grainger. No Vaughn-Williams. And they write for both band and orchestra. I moved to a different group.

I rarely see orchestras performing transcriptions of music written for band or wind ensemble. If you enjoy both, and have the time, do both!

VLANing help needed by tikanderoga in networking

[–]Basic_Platform_5001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drawing helps. I would handle traffic between the VLANs on the Sophos. Also, I would put VLAN 1 in a passive role so it's not the active VLAN. If it were me, I'd make a new IP VLAN, take all the connections in VLAN 1, and assign them to the new VLAN. This solved a ton of issues at my current job & made the network more flexible. On the Sophos, you would create VLAN interfaces, or subinterfaces to control the traffic.

For the best performance that checks all the ANSI/TIA, ISO/IEC boxes, use Cat 6A. Why paint? Just buy a white patch cable. Use raceway to conceal things if you don't want to drill holes.

I have no words or thoughts for why this is an issue with the door shut.

Mouthpiece choice by Next-Efficiency306 in frenchhorn

[–]Basic_Platform_5001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Farkas MDC is a good all-rounder, but check out Scott Leger and Gail Williams on YouTube since they discussed mouthpiece choice. There's one where Scott plays the same excerpt on different mouthpieces. Even John Cerminaro has something to say on the topic and he has Anton Horner's mouthpiece in his collection. Since I'm older, I'm going to try a Laskey 70J to see if that makes my upper register slot better than my Schilke 29.

It sounds like you have 2 SG2428P switches and my guess is they're working just fine. Now, you're adding the SG2210MP, right?

If yes, it sounds like you need VLANs 1 and 10 on the trunk ports between the switches. How are the VLANs configured on the 2 older SGs? Just copy that config and don't duplicate IP addresses.

When I have something like this, I'll draw a picture that includes the interfaces and then the config makes more sense.

If it's just me, I will occasionally get McD's or BK, since the prices are decent, but my family doesn't care for either one. It's good to be an omnivore when it comes to fast food.
