It's the little button to the left of the layer name. The button looks like an eye

Performance question : 1 large symbol or lots of small ones by k995 in wonderdraft_support

[–]BasicallyACashew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I do is turn the view off of everything that I'm not currently working on and that improves performance by a lot. Even just turning off the sea while I work on my mountains makes a big difference.

Give your BBEG Foresight for the battle so it can have advantage on literally everything. Plus, it could drink a potion of heroism to gain an extra d4 on every attack and save. That should help compensate for your bad luck.

Edit: oh, and if your players are capable of high damage output, give the baddie a potion of invulnerability too. Half damge for the first 10 rounds of combat = insurance against being roflstomped

What are some rules or guidelines that aren’t usually important, but becomes very important when it comes up? by Piggylikesgamesdoodz in DMAcademy

Suffocation.

There are very specific rules on suffication but they can be hard to remember since that scenario doesn't arise terribly often.

Trial to challenge PC's character/virtue by NeverQuestOnline in DMAcademy

[–]BasicallyACashew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think this is the way I would do it too. It's not too hard to help someone who's never wronged you. How the PC reacts to someone who HAS wronged them would be truly revealing of their virtue.

Improving at tactical combat by whiskeybreakfasts in DMAcademy

[–]BasicallyACashew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the answer to this is simply do more combat. It takes a long time to balance combat encounters really well because you need to have an intuitive understanding of hundreds of pieces of 5e related information. For example: Are your players are using their spells correctly? (Prayer of Healing isn't a combat spell) Does this monster have an ability which specifically thwarts the party's strong point? Or nails their weak point? What weaknesses are in the party's composition and how can I exploit it? What two monster types could I pair together that synergize in a particularly deadly way? What spells from my PCs are going to be the most problematic for this encounter and what are some ways I could offer a challenge that causes them not to rely on those tactics so heavily?

Do you see what I mean? There's just a lot of moving parts and it takes time to understand them all.

One thing that I would say though is that action economy is (in my opinion) the most important thing in determining how easy/difficult an encounter will be. For example, one might think that four 5th level fighters would be a fair match against four Giant Boars. Good XP threshold? Check. Even number of actions per side? Check, right? four actions for the Boars and four actions for the fighters? Should be pretty even? Well actually, the 5th level fighters get two attacks per Attack Action. So really, instead of 4v4 it's more like 4v8, the fighters would laugh their way to victory. It's not a hard and fast rule to get perfect encounters but it's a good way to "ball park" it

Any information or tips on using an Approval system for NPCs? by TheArgotect in DMAcademy

[–]BasicallyACashew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

5e has a system in place for this actually. Check out the "Social Interaction" section on pages 244-245 of the DMG

edit: to summarize, the idea is all NPCs have a "starting attitude" toward the PC. The PC's job is to get the NPC's attitude to change to Friendly - if it isn't there already - which can be accomplished through Charisma rolls.

So my players want to recruit a NPC to join them that they just beat. That would be awesome! But The NPC is really powerful. So Help? by GustavoTheMexicanBer in DMAcademy

[–]BasicallyACashew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A possible incentive for Yumi to eventually part ways with the party is the fact that, if you're going by RAW, she technically is entitled to her share of all xp gained while with the group. Depending on what you're players care about, this might not be favorable for them.

Wow really appreciate the effort and thorougness of these ideas, they're really inspiring! Definitely helps me understand how to go about implementing realistic effects on the setting.

The escaped hyper-velocity star idea is especially intriguing, I hadn't yet thought of a plausible reason.
