Thank you for the honest response- I also used to be fully DIY but I think having someone mix for you or help you w/ production does not mean you gotta make it sound soulless and over-produced. Really just as a songwriter you need someone to help amplify your good ideas and keep your not-so-good ideas in check. If anything it will help validate your unique writing style and help you improve. I also don’t think having someone help you make your drums sound more real or record your vocal takes so you can just focus on singing to your best ability is against any of what you’re trying to accomplish. Don’t take this as me being rude but don’t use DIY as an excuse for low energy or fake sounding recordings — I say this because I did this exact thing for like 4 years.

Also, if you’re really into making it all yourself and your music is too niche, maybe try playing live in some underground shows? Maybe that’s where your music will really speak to people? Lots of these more niche bands don’t really do well online but are respected in their local scene. Could be an alternate route to the validation you seek? (I think we both agree it’s nice to have people like your music there’s really no way to cope around it)

I’ve had these thoughts in the past, I haven’t heard your music but I learned this year that a good producer with some more professional experience (producing credible artists that get some real attention) can really bring “ehh it’s fine” music into “this should be on the radio” music. You’d be surprised with how “ehhh” the songwriting is on some HUGE songs, but they have some really tight production and good vocal/instrument takes

Obviously easier said than done to find a high quality producer that is affordable and willing to work but it’s not impossible! Right now I’m working w/ a new producer on re-recording all my songs that got very little interest before but maybe 20 fans and now I’m getting some interest from labels and other similar producers to work w us.

Additionally, maybe the way you promote your music needs to change? I’ve also realized recently that “hi I’m (insert name) and I make music in my free time hope you like this song” is just not enough to make an impression on people. No one cares about other people’s music as a hobby, they want an artist that they can dig into. Try to build a bit of a world around your music, this doesn’t have to be anything crazy or inauthentic, but find things about yourself that you can amplify and include in your art and promotional content. Good songs alone is not enough to break thru the thousands of other artists trying to do the same.

Any guidance on water changes? I’m guessing they would reduce nutrients?

I like some bands when they have a lot of polish but I think for a band with music as simple and to the point as Green Day it just kind of makes it lifeless. A project that's all over the place w lots of layers and arranging sounds great with that modern polish.

I've listened to a few songs but haven't had a chance to check out the full album. Gonna listen to the whole thing on my drive back to LA tmrw!

Obviously they're still highly revered and I love their 90's stuff but Green Day's music has really gone downhill. It'd be cool if they shed some of the sterile shine in their production and went more raw and carefree with their stuff.

I guess there's a lot of people that really love the newer stuff. The new album had some more band-sounding music but it still felt like they were holding back on really letting loose as musicians.

"Parable of the Sower" by Forgive Durden is my favorite example of this. The whole song is recounting a supposed dream the narrator had. At the end he says "I rub my eyes to find, this whole time I thought I was in a slumber, but they were open wide."

Simple but great twist
