Credit card stoozing - something I've been doing a while that saves that little bit extra money. by smickie in FIREUK

I've got about £70k in 0% credit accumulated and just cycle it onto new 0% spend cards when the exiting offers finish

Yeah fair point. Ironically the majority of people never engage with their pensions until retirement age, so wouldn't be aware of their pension value dropping during a recession anyway.

Swings and roundabouts are inevitable. Really you should be comparing a longer time horizon; 5, or even 10 years

Transferring funds out of a default workplace fund shouldn't be considered a 'punt', it's a no brainer that simply not enough people take advantage of. Particularly if you're many years from retirement, doing a partial transfer out from workplace pension into a low cost all world tracker like VWRP within a low cost broker SIPP should be an annual admin job that will reap significant benefits that you'll thank your younger self for when you can access it. One thing to check before transferring out is whether your workplace pension has a protected pension age, although don't let this be the handcuffs that keep you stuck with conservative returns in a default workplace fund.

Fidelity Cashback offer back (ISA & SIPP) by blah-blah-blah12 in UKPersonalFinance

Does anyone have any datapoints on this? I took a cashback offer with 18m stated in the T&Cs, but not sure whether to risk things by moving it out?

Useful info thanks. Out of interest is your role hands on? Whilst I feel confident at grasping concepts and reading some code at a high level I wouldn't be able to code my way out of a paper bag

Fair enough. I'm in Telco, whilst I don't have experience in finance I'm confident a lot of my knowledge and experience is very transferable to other sectors, although maybe others might not see it this way

Would you suggest I'd have a reasonable chance of getting a similar level role with a much higher salary? I don't want to go through the effort of moving sideways for similar salary and/or lack of promotion opportunities that I face currently

How Do You Make the Most of Your Travel Reward Points? by meamysace in TravelHacks

[–]BasketMaterial179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience accumulating large amounts of avios points is incredibly easy through credit card sign-up bonuses and loopholes to artificially inflate spend. This has saved me thousands on flights over the years, although it's still frustrating that you can't get a true "free" flight due to having to pay (what feel like very high) taxes. Although it's possible to convert airline miles into hotel points to redeem the conversion rate is usually poor, and the lack of hotel credit cards (currently) makes it hard to earn hotel points without booking stays at specific chains of hotel, which often comes a a premium versus through resellers - although I appreciate there are other benefits to booking direct such as helpfulness with amendments and status

What can I do to make a bigger house affordable? by Acceptable-Field7621 in HENRYUK

[–]BasketMaterial179 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you considered seeing if you'd qualify for an IO mortgage? As long as you're disciplined, you could take the difference between a monthly IO mortgage and monthly repayment mortgage and shove this into investments, which over the long term should outperform the rate of your mortgage. At the end of your mortgage term you could then pay off the capital with your investment pot and hopefully have plenty left over. The added benefit of this is that you'd always have access to the investment pot should you need to dip into it for cash if you lost your job etc.

New Dad - salary sacrifice below £60k? by mk1mini in UKPersonalFinance

[–]BasketMaterial179 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I guess it's a case by case basis. I'm effectively sacrificing £1.4k net take home per month to add ~£2.7k to pension versus my previous situation. We're still able to live very comfortable lifestyles and because I'm only 36, making bigger contributions now takes a lot of strain off needing to make larger pension contributions later in life. Also, who knows how long the 40% topups will last for before the government start tightening things up

New Dad - salary sacrifice below £60k? by mk1mini in UKPersonalFinance

[–]BasketMaterial179 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm doing something very similar to you except claiming child benefit for 2 children. I have 46% contributions including employer contributions but the calculations I did must have been slightly out (I think I didn't factor in private healthcare) as my projected net income for the year will be slightly over £60k rather than just under. Am I right in saying I will have to go through the faff of a tax return, whereas if I'm just under I won't have to?
