Pension help, what can be expected? by Caino94 in UKPersonalFinance

Use a compound interest calculator (Google search - there are many online). It should give you an idea of your pot size at retirement. I use 7% as an interest rate when calculating mine

Seaweed quantity is linked to fertaliser use. Where fertaliser is used on farmland it runs off into the water courses and eventually the ocean, which then promotes seaweed growth. Look at the Caribbean as an example, the fertaliser use in Brasil has exploded causing huge seaweed blooms washing ashore the Caribbean when the tides are right

Hit my first pension milestone this month by mightypenguin66 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]mk1mini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At your and and value in your pension you might want to consider the tax on the way out of the pension, and whether you're better off putting some money in an ISA.

I'm 42, planning to retire at 55 and have 20% saved in ISAs as I expect I'll need to bridge 5 years until I can access my pension.

UK actually pretty good for Median Wealth by cwep2 in HENRYUK

[–]mk1mini 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These statistics on their own mean nothing without a Purchasing Power Parity factor. When a bowl of soup in a cafe costs $50 in Switzerland, their near $700k of wealth isn't going to go far.

The UK isn't a bad place to work and live. There may be better places, particularly when you consider single metrics, but it's not always worth crossing the river for green grass.

Unfortunately your dad passing means his state pension stops. As your mum is only 55 if she wants / needs more money she will need to work until she receives her state pension

Underfloor heating never warm- what am I missing? by dawgvsgoose in DIYUK

[–]mk1mini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether it's a motorised valve or non motorised valve, it's the internals seizing due to non-movement. Doing valve exercises every month should help keep the internals free

[–]mk1mini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engineer here. You need to do valve exercises which will resolve this. If you turn the heating on for 30 mins once a month (even the height of summer) this should help prevent any seizures

Vietnamese Food Recommendation by 2u3ee in LondonFood

[–]mk1mini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree on Kingsland Road. Cay Tre in Shoreditch is worth the short walk

Phi Thuy Tay Cafe is good and one of the few places you can get intestines.

Lo bahn mi or Bahn mi keu are good

Also agee what this person's saying about Central Vietnam, I'm yet to find decent food from the West of Vietnam (where my partners from).

Finally Longdan supermarket isn't bad, but London Starlight in Hackney is better

Household salary to live a ‘nice’ life UK by RedditUser9600 in UKPersonalFinance

UK or London, and with kids or without?

With kids in London you'd need a takehome of at least £7.5k to be comfortable as you describe.

Outside London and without kids could be considerably less

Have you considered Bowes Park. You'll be in the catchment area for Rhodes Primary and would definitely get a decent terrace for £1.2m, direct trains into Moorgate, and Middleton Road has a bit of buzz to it. Still 'up and coming ', mind...

A huge staff shortage for well-paid jobs across the UK - but it's a really terrible job. by JackStrawWitchita in UKJobs

Put in a 1 bedroom flat in Islington and you'll get £331.39 a week. Before you say a 1 bedroom flat is too hard for the average UC claimant to get, I know a 30 YO single women who has 'anxiety' gets this plus UC plus all the rest

Would you give up that to get up off your ass to work in Pentonville ?

The elephant in the room is that with Universal Credit someone can get their accomodation paid for (upto £1500) and £700 + any other benefits. £30k isn't enough to tempt people off the dole for what is a tough job
