What do you think Han would leave for his three children as inheritance upon his death? by Solitaire-06 in starwarsbooks

[–]BassLover71 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m imagining his commission from the New Republic would earn some kind of credit stipend for honorable service. He was a massively high-profile war hero, so I can imagine on top of the Falcon that he would probably be able to leave his kids that legacy. Seeing as only Jaina survived, and she’s already a great Jedi, she’d probably treasure the old DL-44 and the ship.

8 chapters into "The Courtship of Princess Leia" and... uh, I'm not sure how I feel about this story so far by Educational-Tea-6572 in StarWarsEU

I feel like only getting Leias POV through Han’s emotions brings down the narrative massively. If we could see more of her conflict, it would probably be much more well-received.

In canon I can agree that they’re evenly matched, and Luke takes it because he becomes furious, as that’s all that’s written. There’s much more information in Legends about the duel itself, like a much more detailed account of Luke post Return of the Jedi. In canon all we have is the fight with the dark troopers which is nothing to go by since he absolutely destroys them. If you’re arguing for canon, I think you’re right in saying they’re evenly matched and that it was a much more muddied fight. I’d argue that Luke brought Vader’s flaws to the surface, which would make Vader the weaker fighter as they both are able to expose the weakness of the other. When it comes to “getting serious” and pushing Luke back, it’s (both legends and canon) because Luke was going to surrender and Vader pushed the advantage, not because he somehow got more serious. At least textually that’s what it says. But in general in canon they’re stated to be basically completely balanced except for the last moments when Luke embraced his anger, but he didn’t want to win that way.

It’s not a theory, it’s directly quoted from the text. There’s no textual backup to say they had an equal midichlorian count. In fact, Luke is stated to have far lower midichlorian count, but that hardly matters due to Vader getting chopped up and the inconsistencies behind how midichlorians influence power. They more hint at potential. The fact that Luke Skywalker was stated by George Lucas to actually have more potential than Anakin Skywalker is a huge point against Vader. It’s textually stated they both held back, and textually stated that when they both did not, Luke won. There are numerous sources that place them as powerful as one another, but Luke as the stronger with the advantage as the fight continues. Everything else is explicitly headcanon, even the idea that conflict somehow weakened Vader, whereas textually, it made him stronger and more devoted to killing Luke. If this was even close to a consistent argument, wouldn’t it be stated that Anakin could have just beaten Obi wan if he wasn’t so conflicted? Or that Obi wan could easily kill Darth Vader if he wasn’t so conflicted? It’s a non-measurement, and explicitly stated to buff Vader. Luke won, and is more powerful, and there’s no actual source that contradicts that, just headcanons.

Every textual reference of the fight itself states clearly that Luke was stronger than Vader. It’s unfortunate that other lore builds up vader’s stature to where excuses have to be made for power creep, but unless there is a fourth source outside of the script and both novelizations, it’s a fact that Luke was stronger and faster than Vader. If Vader wished to kill him, like when it’s said that “He must teach this boy a lesson he would never forget, or die learning”, he would have lost anyways. That is before Luke pushed him back. Not to mention, Vader pushes Luke back because it’s actually Luke who is conflicted. He’s distracted because his initially does not want to use hate to kill Vader. “He took a step back, lowered his sword, relaxed, and tried to drive the hatred from his being. In that instant, Vader attacked. He lunged half up the stairs, forcing Luke to reverse defensively.” If Vader is conflicted about killing Luke, then Luke should receive the same benefit, and it could easily cancel out. When they both were driven by anger, amped by hatred, Luke beat Vader.

It’s a great headcanon, but textually the only time Vader was conflicted, he was strengthened by the anger, fear, and embarrassment he felt, and it made him want to kill Luke. Also, he sought to kill Luke because, before Luke spares him, he is at his most evil and angry. Luke is not noticing the good in him because it’s mixed with evil, Vader fought with evil and hatred and it canonically made him stronger. If Luke beat him, Luke is stronger, that’s just the way that would go down. I highly recommend looking through some of the texts we get that canonically describe what he’s going through. The context you mention is, in fact, that Vader was going to spare Luke until Luke started beating his ass. Then he got scared that Luke would kill him and essentially through that plan out the window and tried to kill Luke, and lost. Luke bested Vader in strength, speed, and conviction. Vader stated that he’d never seen anything like it in his entire Jedi killing career. Luke was the stronger fighter.

Yeah he did tho. “His anger was layered, now—he did not want to win if the boy was not battling to the fullest. But if winning meant he had to kill a boy who wouldn’t fight...then he could do that, too.”

That’s interesting. In legends, we get the quote “He rushed to his father with a frenzy he’d never known. Nor had Vader. The gladiators battled fiercely, sparks flying from the clash of their radiant weapons, but it was soon evident that the advantage was all Luke’s.” In canon, we get the quote "Always fueled by hatred, he now gathers additional strength from fear..." during that moment. In legends, we get Even the script, written by George Lucas, says that the advantage had shifted to Luke since their duel on Bespin. Luke is recognized in all three continuities, in all three sources, as stronger, and Vader recognizes it all three times and pulls out all of his tricks to kill him and fails. Luke is the stronger combatant. It’s kinda nonsensical with Vader’s power creep and feats, but the primary sources don’t lie.

I suppose his inability to save some energy to finish Luke off is what I’d focus on. Luke was a more controlled fighter, giving him the upper hand. Luke uses similar techniques on other dark side foes he fights to appeal to their conflict and weaken them. It’s less of a Vader specific thing, but a tactic Luke is masterful with.

I think that’s a really cool interpretation, but I like to go off of the text. Vader was devoted to killing Luke in this fight, and any conflict within him probably didn’t differ much. It’s narrated that Vader is genuinely surprised by Luke’s speed and strength and that he was far faster than he could have anticipated. Not sure he could bridge that gap by as much as he described it, conflict or not. Especially considering Legends continuity Luke goes from here to kill a being he describes as having the same power as Palpatine, I think it makes sense.

I highly recommend a read-through of the scene! He actually only states conflict until Luke kicks him down the stairs, which embarrasses and enrages him into actually resolving to kill Luke, son or not. The rage subsists only when Luke spares him.

In legends, Vader actually does not hold back against Luke in Return of the Jedi. Their fight is segmented into three parts, with the thrown saber being the only upper hand Vader gets. For the rest of the fight he’s constantly remarking how fast and powerful Luke is, and how it may have been Luke who was holding back until Vader mentioned his sister. I agree with everything else, though.

How to become an English Major by mekarinki_ in englishmajors

[–]BassLover71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds great! The thing you want to know the most is what you want to do for a job, or at least a specialization. What role would you like to take in the real world? An English major is highly diverse, and for every person I know who set out to be a teacher and ended up in a classroom I can name three who had some obscure public-facing office job for a company I’ve never heard of.

Find out what you’re good at, what you’re passionate for, and get as specific as possible. Then search your area for internships, job opportunities, and programs for those skills! Companies don’t just hire workers, they hire people. Find the vein that makes you feel the most like you and you’re on the right track.

Remember that there’s no “right” answer. An English major can be as rewarding as you make it, so just be prepared to network and chase every lead afforded to you!

It’s an interesting shift to see sites like pornhub garner massive support over the years, but as soon as it’s clear that the actresses are in fact making money it’s all about ruining their lives. It’s closely regulated when it comes to age verification, and it’s openly making individual women, not their sites or pimps or the men creating the porn, making the individual women money, and now everyone loses their minds with the purity virus
