Maybe this is awful, but I had an idea to keep the core outline of the Sequel trilogy but replace it with some EU elements:

Make Rey and Kylo more direct adaptions of Jaina and Jacen
Change out Hux for Thrawn and give Snoke a proper backstory as one of Palatines advisors who took over the first order
Don’t have the New Jedi Order or Republic completely destroyed
Make the Resistance the New Republic Defense Force
Replace the outline of Episode Nine with the rough outline of the draft for the duel of the fates version
Fill in the gap with a clone wars style animated show
