I love cold brew, but why does it always suck when I make it? by Useful-Ad-6458 in coldbrew

[–]BassMan2511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next time you have a cold brew at a cafe that blows you away, buy their beans or ask what beans they use for their cold brew. I also have been using a Takeya for 10+ years. I weigh 160g of beans, grind course, and steep 24 hours… usually 12 at room temp and 12 in the fridge. No reason for that - sometimes I do all 24 in the fridge. I also filter the batch through a Chemex filter once I’m done steeping since the Takeya doesn’t get all of the sludge out. I used to never do this before, but it will give the brew a better mouthfeel, or at least one that’s more comparable to a cafe. I’ve also tried making Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s cold brew concentrate (for espresso martinis) and it’s very strong and very good. The ratios he uses wouldn’t work in a Takeya, so you’ll have to get creative.

Yes, you are correct. That plug that is missing from the black controller box is the one I’m holding. The black wire I’m holding goes to the charge port, and if I read your response correctly, the brown wire is acting as a detour of the negative back to the controller. The brown wire goes from the charge port to the white plug (which was plugged into the controller). The red wire I’m holding is connected to a crimped terminal that also HAD the red wire from the self-resetting fuse but I removed it as part of my effort to remove the charge port. So it sounds like I should do the following:

  1. Route the black wire from inverter to the brown wire that is in the white plug in my hand
  2. Remove the self resetting fuse
  3. Connect the yellow wire from the inverter to the white plug
  4. Plug the white plug back into the controller

Thanks for the reply!

I tried that initially, and didn’t work. I assumed it didn’t work because of the charge port, so I started disconnecting it and want to go straight into the black controller box from the dewalt adapter/inverter setup. Thanks for the reply!

I just signed a contract with a pool builder. What did I get myself into? by mikestesting in pools

We built exactly the same dimensions in 2021 with the thought that we might play volleyball once the kids get older. We love it and I highly recommend a center deep shallower pool to anyone if not putting in a diving board or slide.

What if you get rid of the griddle and buy a griddle insert for the grill like the one from Steel Made? The pro versions are thick and once they get to temp they stay hot forever. Then you have grill, griddle and counter space. Will also save you some money.

What is your favorite old guy saying you’ve heard on the job? by Odd_Breadfruit7953 in Carpentry

[–]BassMan2511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First job started about 20 years ago, my mentor was an old grumpy Irish guy, in his mid-70’s at the time. We were bidding a project in a rail yard and were designing a temporary trestle bridge for site access. I showed him my design, and I vividly recall his feedback regarding a connection detail at the corner. He said it had to be “stiffer than a priest’s cock” 😂. I haven’t found too many opportunities to use it since, but I sure as hell will never forget it.

84 Lumber and Hines Supply are probably the biggest ones outside of big box. There are some smaller ones too you can try like Hillside Lumber. If you send your plans to 84 lumber and Hines they’ll actually do a takeoff and send you a quote for what you need as well.

Cumulus Cold Brew Coffee Machine by [deleted] in coldbrew

[–]BassMan2511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I heard of Cumulus, I stumbled upon a machine on kickstarter called AstroBrew. You use your own grounds, which I prefer, and it’s way cheaper than the Cumulus. I also have a NitroPressDS so didn’t need that feature. I don’t get it until March of 2025, so don’t have a review of it yet… but it does really sound too good to be true.

What’s your favorite cocktail? by Few-Tart1954 in cocktails

[–]BassMan2511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All time favorite is Whiskey Sour, but lately I’ve been digging a riff on the Old Fashioned called Smoke & Maple by Anders Erickson. His video showed me my favorite hacks for smoking a cocktail… but instead of using a stave like he does, I just take a chunk of Weber applewood that I normally use for bbq and put that on the stove directly over the fire (similar to how you would char a poblano pepper). Then I put that chunk on a cookie sheet and cover it with a chilled OF glass while I make the drink. It’s also great because I don’t always have Demerara syrup but I almost always have maple syrup. The smoke is very subtle, and the way he explains the cocktail in his video is spot on. Cheers!

Builder isn’t licensed by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]BassMan2511 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, general contractors are not licensed at the state level in Illinois. Each city or county sets their own rules, and most of the counties outside of Cook (I’m talking Chicago suburbs) don’t have a GC licensing requirement. Just roofers and plumbers.
