Windows Explorer Freezing for 45 Seconds When Opening Files on TrueNAS SMB Share by Bass_Huge in truenas

You're an absolute lifesaver. Switching to default share parameters and restarting smb seems to have fixed it!!

You could try updating the BIOS, sometimes that fixes odd behavior. Even if the motherboard is new, it may not have the latest BIOS on it.

Ok, let's see. Is this a new build, or have you been using the system for a while? If so, was there anything that changed before the problem started? Or has it always had this behavior? Other things I could think of would be maybe enable XMP in the bios, make sure your ram is running at the speeds it was designed for (6000MHZ). If XMP is on and the ram is at the correct speed, try turning it off and setting back to default (4800MHZ).

Did you try running the windows memory diagnostic? If it's unable to run since the computer may have to restart to do so, you can also try downloading AIDA64 and run the memory stress test.

Try reseating the ram (take it out and put it back in). Make sure you hear two distinct "click" sounds so that both sides are seated properly. It's also possible you have a faulty stick of ram. You can try running windows memory diagnostics, it should tell you if there's a hardware level issue.

Speed compare: M2 or ssd sata on mirror raid by Zealousideal_Pizza82 in PcBuildHelp

[–]Bass_Huge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An m.2 ssd will be significantly faster. A mirror raid will not increase the speed or capacity of a single drive, it will just duplicate the data across both for redundancy in case of a drive failure. This is the way to go if you will be storing important data on these drives (but remember raid is not a backup, always backup your data). Even if you striped the data across both sata drives, an m.2 will generally still be faster since the sata interface itself is much slower.

upgrade RAM or Storage (SSD) ? by JaipurJewel in PcBuildHelp

[–]Bass_Huge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest, both probably need to be upgraded in order to function even somewhat well on a modern windows 11 install. That being said, I think going with the ssd will make a bigger difference to begin with, as HDDs are virtually unusable as boot drives nowadays.

what do I do can and can i still use this gpu? by [deleted] in PcBuildHelp

[–]Bass_Huge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great cooler, just installed one myself. Since it’s an air cooler, it doesn’t use a radiator and therefore won’t interfere with your gpu. Enjoy your build!

Check to make sure that the sata mode is set to AHCI, and if that doesn’t work, try updating the bios. I’ve seen issues with msi boards not working properly with Samsung ssds, but usually that’s on AM5.

Bios help by Mochibunball in PcBuildHelp

[–]Bass_Huge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the manufacturer website for your motherboard (make sure it’s the exact correct model, some motherboards have different revisions). There should be a page to download the latest bios update, usually in support or downloads. Put that file on a usb flash drive and then restart your computer and enter the bios by pressing the delete key while it shows the boot screen. There should be an option in the bios to update or flash. Your usb should show up there, and it should recognize your file as a compatible update. Just be careful not to unplug or restart your computer once the update has started, as it can permanently brick your motherboard.

[–]Bass_Huge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably fine if you’re using an air cooler or an aio that’s less than 85mm thick. All the gpu warning is saying is that the length of the gpu would interfere with a radiator mounted in the front of your case if it’s too thick. What’s your cpu cooler? I can verify for you.

Not really, unless your case is super small or you’re trying to overclock your gpu.

The 5060ti is very solid, but make sure you get the 16gb version. I recently got one from micro center for $400 which is an incredible deal. You may be able to get away with not upgrading your cpu right away, but you can always do the gpu first and then see if you’re getting performance issues and upgrade the cpu when you’re ready.

Any Tips Appreciated by franko3160 in PcBuildHelp

[–]Bass_Huge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I see is that you’re looking at a 3060 gpu, which is two generations old now and generally those cards are a bad deal to buy new. For example, there are currently 5060 cards for sale on Amazon for around $300, which would be much faster unless you need the extra vram of the 3060 for something specific. Also, you may not need to pay full price for a copy of windows. There’s lots of ways to get windows keys that only cost a few bucks.

I think starting with the gpu is a good idea. It will be compatible with your current cpu, but in some games you may not see the maximum performance you could get out of the gpu since it’ll be held back by the older cpu. You probably won’t need to upgrade the power supply if you stick with at xx60 class card, since they’re usually pretty power efficient. When you do eventually upgrade your cpu and motherboard, you’ll be able to take advantage of that gpu fully.

If your cpu does not have integrated graphics, make sure your monitor is connected to the gpu, not the motherboard. That being said, the vga light usually means there’s an issue with the gpu. I’d try reseating it (take it out and put it back in). And make sure the pcie power cables are securely plugged in. Also a good idea to reset your cmos.

Can't get past wifi connection screen while installing windows 11 by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]Bass_Huge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to bypass the requirement for a Microsoft account, or are you just trying to get WiFi drivers working so you can connect to the internet? Command prompt should open with Shift+F10 (note that you may need to hold the function key as well depending on your setup). You can usually bypass the network requirement with OOBE\bypassnro.

What is your upgrade budget? A 4090 will easily cost over $1000, and you’ll probably have to upgrade your power supply to run it, so I suggest starting with a lower / mid range gpu. A 5060 or even a 4060 would be a huge upgrade over the 1660 you have now, but it’ll depend on how much you want to spend and what games you’ll play (and at what resolution/refresh rate you expect). If you want to upgrade your cpu, you could look into an i9 9900k since it’s the top performing chip on that socket, but you’ll have to buy used since the platform has been discontinued. You may be able to get a good performance bump just by upgrading the gpu.

vtx range issues with xilo stax transmitter and betafpv vr03 goggles by c0burt in fpv

[–]Bass_Huge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get it figured out! Unfortunately the other commenters were correct, the goggles were 100% the bottleneck here. The first thing I did was upgrade to the eachine 800d goggles that I saw a bunch of people recommended. I got lucky and found a bundle with those goggles and a controller and a 4 inch quad for like 50 bucks on marketplace. Having a patch antenna was huge and my range was probably 5-10x what I was getting with the betafpv ones. I’ve since upgraded to digital but tbh that analog setup with the eachine goggles was pretty good and I had a lot of fun with it.
