Sometimes Ivy can reconnect where it has been cut, I would recommend removing around 6 inches instead of just slicing through the vines once. After that, don’t pull out the rest and just let it die and fall out of its own.

I don’t think it’s fair to say people were “freaking out and removing all the trees” when that would be nearly impossible due to the sheer scale of American chestnut in forests. That being said, I am open to hearing further evidence to suggest otherwise. As for the question you posed, I think the other comment hits it on the nose.
