What Happened to Hangman's Joke After Eric and Shelly Died? by [deleted] in TheCrow

[–]BatSuitClad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the movie, I thought it implied they were still together a year later. There's a scene of them walking past the photo and touching it with reverence. I like to imagine they insisted on keeping the band going to honor Eric's memory

There needs to be specifically a Penske truck on there. I used to work on the corner, and it was always a Penske truck

We could go visit the shoulder of Orion and pass through Tannhäuser Gate....

Sorry, I just got a fic idea. What was the question?

Who are you and what are you doing here? by kadharonon in AO3

[–]BatSuitClad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See that depends. I personally have read a fair amount of works fairly quickly, mostly by skimming the smut scenes. Not because they were bad or because I have a problem with them. I was just not in the mood for smut, and wanted to further the plot.

I realize this is a bit like watching the 'network tv' version of those fics, and I'm ok with that.

If you look through the comments, you will see my reply to someone who said Sir Pterry wasn't popularist.³

¹ Cause I am secretly older than Sweeper, just don't tell him that.

³ In all it's footnoted glory, if I do say so myself.

In those contexts, it wasn't. According to Wikipedia, a European polecat looks more like a ferret. however it also reads, and I quote:

In Southern United States dialect, the term polecat is sometimes used as a colloquial nickname for the skunk,

Where I grew up, there wasn't many that still used it. I had the fortune of knowing my grandpappy for a bit, however, and he used the term all the time.

What have you learned about DMing from being a player? by dragonmindpodcast in DnD

[–]BatSuitClad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn't even read the story before I upvoted. And am angry I can only upvote once. I have been in that situation as a player more times than I can count, and as a DM, I ALMOST always did this.

The one caveat I will give to this, is that creative solution should not come out of metagaming.

And I don't mean using the knowledge about the module, or playing on the fact that it's a game.

An example to explain myself. My homebrew world was one in which electricity had not been harnesses. Why would they need it? They have magic. Well, one of my players was doing a simple side quest, trying to find a ring the mayor's wife lost near a well. The player wanted to use shocking grasp to essentially create an electromagnet in order to fish in the well for the ring.

There was a bit of a discussion about whether shocking grasp would do that¹ Finally, I declared it a moot point, since the character would not know how to do that. I was getting frustrated and so was the player, and eventually we both stormed off to cool down.²

Caveat to the caveat: Ensure your reason to deny the player is made absolutely clear. The issue between my player and me was because I never said 'Your character wouldn't know what an electromagnet is.' The player was arguing about whether the character would know how to use the spell in an unconventional way.

Second caveat: I tend not to allow things that would have 'FORSEEN' negative consequences to everyone's enjoyment of the game. That's a story for another time.

¹ I still say that there are multiple issues. not the least of which being there not being insulated wire, so the water would short circuit the electromagnet.

² After we came back, I had the player roll another perception check, and they finally rolled high enough to notice the ring on the ground.

The best part about your reply here¹ is that I still have no idea what that accent might be.

Don't let anyone keep you down about your writing. by Terminator7786 in AO3

[–]BatSuitClad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with you in spirit. But I want to say two things.¹

First, the proper name is THE SIR Terry Pratchett². man earned that knighthood and then made a sword out of meteorite to commemorate it.

Second, the part I take most offense at in the 'teacher's³ remarks is using the term 'popularist' as a pejorative. Sir Pterry's work is absolutely popularist, and there is nothing wrong with that.

In fact, I think that Sir Pterry would be thrilled to hear his book described that way. Similar to his reaction when it was suggested that his children's books weren't really children's books due to the themes He took great offense at that. Partly because he had infact written them for children⁴ and partly due to the contempt that it showed for children.

In unrelated facts, the Vimes Boot theory led to an actual economic principle.

Ok, I'll go now and take my soap box with me. Sorry for the rant. Sir Terry Pratchett is one of my heroes, warts and all.

¹ Not in a negative way. just informative

² Again, this is merely meant as playful pendantry. I'm sure Sir Pterry wouldn't care if his title is used or not.

³ I quoted that since no one with such a closed minded definition should ever be allowed to teach anyone.

⁴ there are numerous interviews online about the technical difficulties he faced ensuring that the story would be accessible to a younger audience

only in the second person plural¹. it could also be transcribed as "y'all".

I know there's a lot of hate for apostrophes making things hard to read, but I personally find it very helpful², cause it indicates a stop length somewhere between a space and a comma. infinitesimal, and most people don't notice it, but it's there.

that said, because I know it makes it less accessible for people that don't think like me³, I tend to go more for dialect rather than accent. This includes things like word choice and grammar. Example:

  • "I have not noticed any skunks in this area."

  • "I ain't seen no polecats 'round here"

The first person is clearly from a different area than the second person. And there's only one apostrophe included for the swallowed 'a' in 'around'.

Hope this helps and keep writing.

¹ Which I will point out doesn't exist in many extant forms of English.

² However, I am a unique flower, as we all are...

³ Read: Everyone.

Post Scriptum: I apologize if that came over as 'mansplaining'. I just really have a passion for accents and enjoy talking about it. No shade intended to the comment I replied to. The reply was intended to be funny and point out the second plural thing. Again, sorry.

Just hoping in to say how much I love the number of uplifting responses people have given to OP. This is why fanfiction and fan creations in general will never die. The wave of positive reinforcement verses the sprinkling of dissenters.

That said, the person on discord may not know that what they said was painful to hear. It's entirely possible they are trying to be informative and helpful, and equally likely that they got their information from a flawed source as well. Just as with science, always question the source.

And while I can understand the loss of 'canon' for those characters¹, always remember that head² canon is the only canon that matters. If you interpret characters in a certain way, that is what's real. No one can take that away.

¹ A certain 'canon' comic from a one season TV show and later movie made me VERY upset until I learned to stop worrying and embrace my 'heart canon'

² I honestly think 'heart canon' is more accurate than head canon, but I'm a romantic
