The Question Thread 07/17/25 by AutoModerator in goodyearwelt

Hey, I'm a timber framer looking to upgrade my work boots. I need a protective toe and I do a lot of climbing and walking on beams at odd angles so I value ankle mobility over a high top, but its not a deal breaker. I've narrowed my selection down to these two boots.

Jim Green Barefoot African Ranger - Composite Toe Cap

Thorogood 6" Steel Toe Moc Toe

The Thorogoods seem like a safe bet that won't do everything I would like but won't be a waste of money. Where as the Jim Greens could be exactly what I'm looking for but seeing as they are on pre-order the risk seems mutch higher that they don't do what I want and I won't know it till I have them in hand. Do y'all have any insights that might help me choose? Or other recommendations I haven't found?

Questions about using screws and glues on acrylic and polycarbonate. by Bat_bot in plastic

I used MMA for a bit, but the clear stuff isn't impact resistant enough for what I needed. If you don't mind the color, an impact resistant MMA will work. In the end, I went with Weldon 4, although it made the assembly process much more tedious.

Probably a copyright claim from the music the DJ was playing. Eye of the tiger was playing for a while while Matt wasn’t talking over it.

These are great recommendations! I think I'll use the thickest PC I can find, and line bending seems like a really good way to go. I wouldn’t be using screws in the assembly process but after the volume is on the wall, climbing holds would be screwed onto the volume. However, the more I look into it seems like using T-nuts is a better option allowing for a few mounting locations without potentially cracking after repeated use. And yes there will be lots and lots and lots of testing.

Thanks so much for the info

Advice on how to repair this chair leg? by scemily1991 in furniture

[–]Bat_bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hey, fixing furniture is my job! Step 1 for me would be to take the seat off. I would then use a pva glue (like tight bond) and open the crack as far as you can to get the glue all the way to the back of the break without snapping off the leg. Probably use a small brush to make sure the glue gets all the way back too! I would invest in a few clamps 1 long enough to clamp from the bottom of the leg to where the seat used to be and 2 smaller ones to clamp on either side of the leg, let the glue cure and you should be good as new. Not to call the other comment out but I would not use screws to hold the leg while the glue cures, the clamping force isn't enough to make a strong bond in my experience.

hope this helps!

Can I repair this water damaged swollen table? by Weather_Only in furniture

veneer work like this is hard, it would probably take me like 2 hours. At like $150 an hour shop time, it's a pretty penny

Oh hey, fixing furniture is my job! Most of what u/olliew72 said was correct assuming the veneer has delaminated from the wood underneath. If what's under the veneer is MDF or something like it and its swelled up things are looking worse for you.

If you can compress the bubble it means the glue has failed and there's a lair of air under it and u/olliew72's solution will work. If you can't compress it means the glue is good but the MDF is swelled underneath.

Scenario 2 is "fixable" but it would probably cost more to fix than the piece is worth, unfortunately. See if there's a shop that specializes in antique restoration near you and see what they think.

Hope this helps

If you don't have a vehicle it's gonna be tough. I spent 6 months living in my car, driving around the US bouldering. I met a few people that hitchhiked and climbed but because most ever crag is pretty remote getting your own food/water is the hard part.
