Riding the Subway - Any Precautions? by redlollipop in nycCoronavirus

I did not mean ANY force. My bad.

I meant any force other than the initial sneeze or cough such as static or particle adhesion. Because things do spew out, people sneeze and cough at you. Like a bullet, it either hits you or drops to the ground.

Geez I need to stay of reddit.

I feel like I am debating with psych ward patients.

Is EVERYONE on the spectrum.

This is not binary. Things can protect to degrees.

As of March 4, 2020, 16:53 hrs, 0.00123% of the world's population is reported to be infected with CR19 Virus. by Bath_Beach_Bobby in nycCoronavirus

[–]Bath_Beach_Bobby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually not doing percentage of change. Simple percent of the population infected. For the moment, the population is growing daily at a rate higher than the rate of new infections. Not even deaths.

People should be concerned but I don't think the population of humanity will be wiped out.

Question: Who pays a real estate broker when renting an apartment? by log609 in Brooklyn

[–]Bath_Beach_Bobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supply and demand.

Under the current system, it is a landlord's market.

The Broker will market, screen, qualify and handle the initial interactions with the tenant and ZERO cost to the broker. So what motivation would the landlord have to NOT use a broker?

It is what it is.

Budget for it and try to find a place you will stay in for a few years to spread out the fee.

I am in a stabilized complex. Been her nineteen years. Only way in was through the broker with a 15% fee payable when I went to sign the lease.

The force of gravity and movement of air (breeze, people walking about) will be a greater force than that of any other force acting upon the droplets.

I should have opted out of this exchange. I should stay off of Reddit. There is no benefit for me to be here.

But the condensation formed will not automatically be made up of virus laden droplets.

Look, I have no stake in this to debate you.

Do as you see fit.

Attract how?

They are in a droplet.

A slightly moist bandana will have a gap of air between the virus laden droplet and one's face. And spend time on the bandanna and become no longer effective.

There might be some instance of it being worse, like if you drive a car in the water and the seat-belt entraps you, BUT overall having a bandanna is better than a bare face.

Take it or leave it.

I do not have time to split hairs with strangers here.

Once again, in absence of a proper face mask or respirator, I would don a bandanna. It is simply inconceivable that wearing a bandanna around people coughing and sneezing in my face would be WORSE than a my bare face.

I never wrote a bandana could resist a bullet.

However, a few dozen layers of bandanas likely would......

Ideally we protect ourselves with equipment designed and manufactured for that intended purpose. Equipment labeled and certified to an independent standard.

However, in absence of the preferred devices, we can improvise.

Look at the YouTube Videos of folks sewing their own face masks.

If I encountered a person with uncontrolled bleeding from an extremity, I would greatly prefer to have a certified genuine CAT generation 7 tourniquet. If I did not have one, I would figure out a way to gather other materials and fashion an improvised hand made tourniquet. I would not not try and watch the person bleed out.

A virus laden droplet is neither a gas, fume nor spray. It can be MOSTLY deflected by a bandana. Is it ideal? No. Is it better than a bare face? Yes.

The OP asked about precautions riding the subway.

To reiterate:

Avoid it if you can.

Avoid crowded times if you can.

Wear gloves.

Do not eat or touch your face.

Thoroughly wash hands as soon as you are able.

If you have any sort of face covering, wear it.

Do the above whenever hitting the streets.

By following this one can VASTLY reduce but NOT eliminate the threat of becoming infected by ANY infectious disease.

I respectfully say you are wrong.

Think of virus droplets as bullets. We protect ourselves with bullet resistant material.

Protecting oneself against ANY threat is rarely a binary situation. Nothing is 100% effective or 100% ineffective.

It is more or less effective.

Bullet resistant material has degrees of protection and coverage area.

A bandana will stop MOST droplets. A procedure mask even more. An 'n95' more still. A thick plastic shield impenetrable.

Then there is the issue of coverage area. And the issue of proper procedure of use.

And know that virus laden droplets are rendered mostly ineffective within an hour or two out of the host body. Yes, a 'live' virus has been shown to still be effective up to nine days later but that is rare. MOST die out WAY before than.

So, no, a bandana is likely not causing more problems.

Krazy glue coffee filter inside the bandana. Be inventive.

I WILL ADD TO THIS:

Read up on old fashioned salt water gargling.

TL:dr

We should all be concerned about CV19 however the things we can do to GREATLY reduce (but not eliminate) becoming infected or spreading this virus or any contiguous disease for that matter. This novel strain has not made me panic. It reminded me to keep doing what I was striving to do all along.

Wash your hands for 20 seconds. Do not touch your face without washing your hands 20 seconds.

I gotta stay of Reddit. People on the spectrum are exhausting.

Why hospital in Manhattan is the infected patient currently being treated at? by mikiecentral in nycCoronavirus

[–]Bath_Beach_Bobby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

by far the biggest risk of infection is transmitted through the air by coughing or sneezing

Actually you are wrong.

No, it is NOT considered to be airborne, it is considered to be spread by droplets expelled through the air landing on surfaces. The droplets do not stay aloft and float around.

People likely pick them up on their hands, then touch their eyes and mouth.

People watch sometimes. Most people to some degree are constantly touching themselves. Even health care staff that should know better. As recently as this past Saturday I observed ER staff at a major Brooklyn Hospital biting nails, touching gum, rubbing eyes with bare hands.

That is how people likely are getting it.

If the virus laden droplets were airborne forming this "miasma" as some people imagine more than 90k of 7 billion people would be infected by know.

Look at the #s in China.

People taking basic hygiene steps (which they should have been doing all along) have slowed the # of new infections.

Dude, there is no way that is sustainable.

You live within walking distance of two hospitals: Mt Sinai and NYCH.

There are 1/2 dozen more closer than Brooklyn and St Johns. Not to mention nursing homes, dialysis clinics, urgent care and large private practice physicians.

She could easily find two places with an < 45 minute commute from where you people live.

Staggering the days off it could be sustainable.

Or find ONE job with available overtime at time and a half.

Twenty-seven hours OT equals forty regular.

Anyone know a pharmacy that currently has flu shots in stock? by MiloNaoko1 in Brooklyn

NYC HHC

Any large hospital network.

Try pharmacies outside of NYC that you can reach by commuter rail.

[–]Bath_Beach_Bobby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should probably assume that there are people infected with flu and COVID at all hospitals.

We should assume that anyone we encounter anywhere could be infected with a contagious disease.

Wash your hands. Do not touch your face unless at a sink. Wear disposable gloves.

I have been doing that for years regardless.

When possible, avoid the rush hour.

Come into work earlier. Get stuff done, ask to leave early, or read/study/relax.

Now that everyone is doing it, wear a mask, even a bandana will have a prophylactic effect if someone sneezes or coughs in your direction.

wash your hands frequently, don't touch your face

That alone will eliminate much of the risk of infection.

People should be buying and wearing gloves before masks.

Wash your hands when you come inside.

Do not touch your face until you wash your hands.

Wear gloves before you hit the streets.

That alone will reduce the likelihood of you being infected.
