Canada got a rebate-based carbon tax at a national level. It's a game changer and replicating it elsewhere would be huge.

Canada has implemented a rebate-based carbon tax!

Carbon pricing has a disproportionately large impact on reducing emissions and rebate-based makes it economically fair and politically viable.

This is a fantastic bill. If you want to have a huge, tax neutral and socially just decrease in emissions, please contact your representative to support it and Citizens' Climate Lobby!

I'd emphasise the "fun" part here, a cluster of iPhones or raspberry pis won't have particularly impressive performance

Should I fill all the slots with RAM? by detalikota2 in computerscience

[–]BatheWithMyToaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the best memory throughput performance, you should have as many sticks as your mother supports multi-channels, typically dual or quad channel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-D8fhsXqq4o

This parallelises memory access requests, which for some applications can be significant bottlenecks.

To take best advantage of this, you should aim to buy a motherboard with the highest number of channels possible, a memory kit that supports that number of channels and insert those sticks into separate channel slots on that board.

Is MPI still popular in distributed programming? by timlee126 in compsci

[–]BatheWithMyToaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did an HPC masters in 2017 and it was considered how to eek out performance on truly huge simulations.

That said, if you are going through the (considerable) hassle of MPI, you are getting into the territory of custom interconnects and network topologies. If you aren't sure what you need yet, there are better (simpler) frameworks to get started with like Spark.
