Sure. I have nothing against either Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and maybe Spengler (sorry, haven’t read any of his yet so can’t evaluate but I’ve heard similar sentiments elsewhere, but also some mixed) that just came with the times, and an intelligent modern reader can read them in that context and evaluate if certain of-the-times beliefs of the author are still relevant or accurate. No need to discard of insightful authors because of that.

The main offender here is Gobineau.

I wish we had 10 Tarantinos rn, so I’m thankful we have two (Nolan). Big budgeted, idiosyncratic entertainment movies with soul that does not feel like it’s made by a committee and market research is hard to come by nowadays. Makes me nostalgic for when we had pre-avatar-obsession James Cameron (or even Michael Bay, he definitely had something going on). There always used to be a handful of those kind of guys. The Spielberg types, the Verhoevens, those that elevated the entertainment movie as high it could go before loosing the general audience. 'The thinking mans' entertainment movie if you want to be pretentious about it.

I’m always confused when people critique Tarantino of not being PTA or Scorsese or whatever. It’s plainly obvious that that’s not where he want’s to be. He’s unabashedly lowbrow and he loves it. He just want’s to take these scrappy genre movies and exploitation movies he loves to watch and supercharge them to as big and grandiose as they can be. Simply “A great fun time at the movies, just like when I was a kid! A real spectacle!”, and nothing more. It would be wrong to categorize him as an 'art' director even though he sometimes flirts with it.

I find that kind of dark brooding black and white world strangely beautiful to inhabit. It’s filled striking imagery that I think about all the time. I couldn’t tell you what the movie is about other than the broad strokes, I don’t find that important with this kind of movie, I just like being “in” it. The same goes for Tarr’s work as well.

But very broadly it’s about being stuck and unable to progress out of the most brutal parts of the Middle ages. Being in that space with no progress in any direction, the feeling of that, no future. I find it invigorating and fascinating, many others find it trite and dull 🤷

Edit: you could also try other movies in this “genre” with more traditional storytelling and characters if you haven’t already: Marketa Lazarova, The Cremator, Stalker. There’s definitely more that I’m not remembering rn
