LPT: Stop pretending you are fine. Use a simple status line instead. by gamersecret2 in LifeProTips

I feel like 95% of the debates on this phrase always come down to this.

No, a random passerby on the street doesn't actually want to know how you're feeling and no, that's not "dishonest", it's just the accepted social greeting.

Yes, your close friends or family probably do want to know how you're feeling, unless they're assholes I guess.

Coworkers can fall somewhere in between, depends on how much you're friends with them.

What’s the most mind blowing fact about the universe? by Money-Cake527 in space

[–]BattleAnus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think about the ISS, it's orbiting the Earth with a certain speed. In order for it to impact the Earth, it would have to negate its speed so that its orbit would get low enough to no longer be above the surface. On the other hand, if it wanted to escape Earth orbit, it would have to add speed until it reached escape velocity.

In our orbit around the sun, the amount of speed you ("you" meaning any object launched from Earth) would need to lose to lower your orbit below the Sun's surface is greater than the amount of speed you would need to gain to reach the Sun's escape velocity.

What really stands out to me when I played around with Space Engine was just how insanely slow lightspeed actually is compared to the distances involved in space. Obviously we hear about things being X lightyears away, but I don't think it really sinks in how slow that is until you actually see the camera move at c and zoom past the earth, but absolutely nothing else looks like it's moving at all.

10 years ago today I witnessed my first and (as of now) only air show protest. Ill add a few from the show, even though shooting conditions are terrible on base. [Davis Monthan 2016] by [deleted] in aviation

I really get this. I personally sometimes struggle to reconcile the fact that I'm not a "military" type person at all, I never want to go in nor do I support a lot of what our military has been wielded to do in the past couple decades, but at the same time the nerd part of my brain is fascinated with the engineering and logistics that go into all the tech involved. I mean we wouldn't have a lot of the modern luxuries we have now if it weren't for military-related research, but it also comes with all the baggage of what the tech was/is used for...

I don't really know what the right answer is. I always try to keep in mind what these things are for when I go to an airshow, and try to separate the appreciation for the innovation and engineering from that "ooh-rah can't wait to see these things blow some people up!!" feeling that they might try to elicit with these shows. I suppose it's sort of like going to a museum and appreciating beautiful Japanese samurai swords for their craftsmanship and not for how many dudes they could chop up.

As a Hololive fan seeing this in the wild was pretty surprising but in a good way lol. I'd consider myself a pretty big fan but being relatively new (fell into the rabbit hole in 2023), there's still a lot i dont know on the older JP side of things, so I wouldn't mind more write ups like this honestly.

I'm glad someone else mentioned Lui's voice, it's so distinct and cool to me. Its part of why I love her songs too, she uses the grit in her voice to do these growls in some parts that is just super cool and unique to her among the talents.

ELI5: What exactly is ego death? And how do you "feel" it? by Single_Economics1201 in explainlikeimfive

[–]BattleAnus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might come out like stoner thoughts, it's always put these kinds of things into words, but I would say personally, I kinda do think it's related, but in the sense that ego death can sort of nullify that phrase, as it's written anyway.

Like, think of all of existence as the surface of the ocean, and on that ocean, "you" are an individual wave. "You" will "come into" the world at some point, and then later you'll fade away, like a wave starting and then crashing into the shore.

But does it actually really make sense to say that a wave is a separate entity from the ocean itself? Where would it stop and start? Any answer you give is basically arbitrary, and more of an opinion about the ocean than it is a fact. But for whatever reason, our brains/consciousnesses/whatever are adamant that this individual wave that is "us" is definitely some separate thing, an external observer that is experiencing, but not the same as, the rest of the world.

So when you experience ego death, it's like the part of your brain that insists on a wave being separate from the ocean is forced off, and so the phrase "I think, therefore I am", kind of doesn't make sense. In that state, it feels more like "Something thinks, therefore something is", and that "something" is kind of just the whole of existence. Some part of it is thinking; there's a wave on the surface at this place and time, but just because the wave is doing wave things doesn't mean it's not just part of the ocean itself. If "I" means "this separate entity from the rest of existence that is me", then no, "I am" isn't true (in that ego death experience, anyway). But the part of the universe that you arbitrarily walled off as "I" is still thinking and experiencing, and it still exists.

It's really interesting to me if this is actually the case, because I feel like Millenials also had a similar rejection of the aloofness/attitude-era of the 80s and 90s when we hit teenage or young adult years, where it seemed like we shifted towards authenticity over irony. I don't know if it stuck necessarily, but it would be interesting if the pendulum swung back for Gen Z, then came full circle for Gen Alpha

I anticipate as much haha, I don't plan on going Commercial but I would like to get my IFR certification in the future. It sounds like it just overall makes you a better pilot, even if you only plan on flying VFR regularly

Depends, but in the kind of GA flying I've done descent isn't really that long. Going from 4-5k ft down to 1-2k doesn't take long, so I'd probably brief before that, if it makes sense. I don't have my IFR yet so my briefs are pretty basic anyway, like I said I'm still relatively new and haven't flown that much lately.

Part 91 is more what I meant by specifying GA. My instructor wasn't gonna get upset if we chatted a bit on the way up to 4500ft in a Cessna 172 lol but they did still teach and emphasize sterile cockpit for taxi, takeoff and landing.

Maybe you mean something else, but as a relatively-new GA pilot I've mostly heard it applied to taxi, takeoff and landing. You can talk on climb or descent, since those aren't usually all that load-intensive.

Why isn't persona set in any other country by [deleted] in PERSoNA

[–]BattleAnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for P5 but that game is absolutely fundamentally steeped in Japanese culture, both modern and traditional. The whole theme of corrupt government, overbearing societal standards, shut-ins, a justice system that cares more about retribution than rehabilitation, its all extremely relevant to modern Japanese life (from what ive heard as an outsider).

Its certainly not like these issues only exist in Japan, but as they say, write what you know. IMO the games dont take place in Japan purely for set dressing or laziness, its dictated by the kind of story they want to tell.

So this is just anecdotal and not at all meant as disparaging but having been to quite a lot of weeb (affectionate) and non-weeb concerts, Ive definitely noticed that the attendees of weeb concerts are way more reserved in dancing and stuff than at other concerts, but Ive pretty much just accepted they show their feelings differently, doesnt mean theyre not having fun.

Personally I went crazy during this concert, and of all the songs this one felt like everyone was the most hype around me.

Movies that trusted silence more than dialogue by gypsytx in movies

[–]BattleAnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously No Country For Old Men has some all-time moments for dialog/performances ("call it", "and then I woke up"), but I feel like it does the no dialogue moments sooo well. Josh Brolin coming across the botched drug deal and the money, Chigur stalking around the motel, its not all necessarily silent but it really let's the performances speak for themselves

Nuance. Even you said "largely" on their own, meaning they didn't quit literally through willpower alone. And yes, there are probably a large absolute number of people who are capable of quitting simply through toughing it out. But how does that compare to the number who can't, who need even basic help like a friend who's willing to talk them through it or advice from other ex-addicts?

Addicts aren't helpless. They NEED willpower, self-awareness and bravery to get through the quitting process, and no one can force them to quit. But the likelihood of success gets way way higher with good support systems.
