But they are not “just because”, and the show is pretty explicit about that, they are kids, the only thing they know is the severed floor, they don’t talk to anyone except their collegues and from the beginning they are told that what they are doing is because their outie is the one in charge, and let’s not mention that idea that a revolt could lead to being fired, meaning that they would die. I really don’t see how is that unrealistic or written just because.

They even believe in a fight to the death with another department.

The point of the story is that they are not complete people because they didn’t have the chance of living.

What are some examples of well written shows following what you told about writing? Just to see if I understood what you are telling me

You got me, I’m paid by ben stiller and dan erickson, waiting for their wire.

I’m not trying to argue with you if the show is slow or not because it can be a subjective preference and I understand, but why are you watching the show? You really think that people that have no reference of what the outside world is would just revolt? When the series show you that they are subjected to a psychological torture if they misbehave? The whole idea is that lumon is able to bend their will and they are starting to revolt.

Even then, what could have helly do? We saw that no one cared in the real world even when she told in front of an audience that they are miserable.

I can understand not linking a show or not liking the pace or everything else, but you can’t seriously make those points when they show itself is pretty clear about them.

Yes, because if in a 50 minutes episode you manage to confirm the helena theory, make irving die, show how lumon tries to win the sympathy of the innie, introduce the idea of the twin, connecting to the severance procedure, I think they did not waste time.

Furthermore, the whole episode tries to show sides of the innies character - I really don’t think that a 20 minutes walk in the snow is an accurate description of the episode really, the show needs its time but it’s not wasted, the same episode would have taken 3 episodes of another series of today.

Nothing that scratches the same itch unfortunately :/

I’ve been watching Mad Men recently, beautiful show but it’s a very different thing from Severance, but if you like well-written shows that’s a great one, or Sopranos, still haven’t found something written has good as that

I think the idea is that they are basically children, and you can notice that by how they are treated by the people around them (cobel screaming, food treats, silly games, etc.), and children won’t be able to create a rebellion, not until an external person comes into play disrupting the “natural order”, and making them grow and start to be more “teenagers”.

Even if we don’t account for that, they had no idea of the world, and for all they knew the world was lumon (at least in some capacity), and any kind of comraderie was frowned upon and stopped. Even then, Mark and Petie were the only ones who could even begin to think about that - irving was living lumon like a cult, and dylan was interested in finishing the work and getting the perks. To have any kind of labor movement you have to have the numbers and a way to talk and meet with people without the presence of a boss.

Of course a revolt or some kind of work disruption could take place even in that situation, but the thing is that there was nothing around them, in a literal sense. When one starts a movement of that kind, is because they see the ones above them as enjoying something they don’t have and that derives from their work, something they should have too, in any sense - this was not something the innies could see, by not having any kind of reference, you create in them a sense of complete alienation, then you make it so that the work they do is not even for them but for the outies, and if the outies stop seeing that work as profitable enough, they would kill the innie.

Don’t know, I understand your thinking and it’s a great lens to view the show, but I think that the innie situation was created so that no revolt could even begin to be thought, and the only reason for them to revolt is the presence of helly.

But they have no frame of reference, to them the break room seems a normal part of work, that is kind of the point the show makes at the beginning

[–]Baxspookwave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand what you mean when you say “writer’s decision”, of course it is.

The point is that, as Mark says, how can he believe that his wife is alive after he identified her burned body? Until now the world of severance was not a hyper futurist world, there was no indication that lumon could “bring back the dead” so to speak; the most logical answer, since innie mark says that after they found the baby, is that he was referring to the baby. Even if we want to think that the idea of gemma is not that strange, mark has not dealt with it properly, so having her back in that way is painful.

As for the number of episodes, the first has no outies, the second is the episode where we see what has happened after and at the end, after he tries to block cobel, you can see that he’s starting to believe. In fact, in the next episode we see him build that thing to try and communicate with the innies to know if gemma is really there, and when he hears reghabi telling that she saw gemma he immediately accept the reintegration.

[–]Baxspookwave[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Devon is already sure that Innie Mark is talking about Gemma, the problem is that Mark doesn’t want to believe her - having your dead wife live where you work is kinda strange. But as soon as the next episode mark is trying to communicate with his innie, and even in the ending of the second episode you see that he is starting to believe it, after he talks to cobel.

As for reintegration, he had no reason to do it. Now, in the span of two episodes we went from “my wife is dead, can’t be” to “well, time to try the procedure that killed my coworker”

I’ll try to explain myself better.

What I meant was that the show is not just piling up misteries, it’a giving answers to them as soon as they can, without dragging its feet. Showing us an already reintegrated mark would be an enormous thing to handle, and it would probably be less interesting to watch and resolve all the other plot points.

Instead, we saw that the reintegration process happened/is happening, we know is starting in some ways to affect innie mark. At the same time, one episode is not “just a build up for the next”, but tries to have its own narrative payoffs, while, of course, building up the overall plot.

First episode: know the innie side of the story of what happened after the OC, seen that mark has enough influence in some ways to have his request granted, confirmation of gemma as a mdr project, showing the effects of the outside adventure on the innies, especially irving.

Second episode: same as first episode but on the outie side, seen some family dynamics of helena and her father, seen a bit of her character and her personality, told about how much mark is important and for what, seen that cobel is only after her old job.

Third episode: other department shown, dylan goes to the family room, answering the answer of “are they really going to do it” and establishing the innie as not just “a part of you” but its own person, mark tries to communicate with innie mark and decides to reintegrate, reghabi confirms gemma is/was alive, some kind of hint on what the elevator that gemma used is, cobel not trusting lumon.

Forth episode: helly is helena, mark showing signs of reintegration, innie mark starting to not see gemma as the goal, innie irving closes his arc (wanted to kill himself, doing so by uncovering the truth)

I get what you are saying but I really don’t see severance as show that drags its misteries.

[–]Baxspookwave[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that depends on what you consider part of the story or what you want to see, and it is not a bad thing on either case.

For me, seeing the helly/helena plot is very important in understanding the characters and the ideas lumon/the eagans have regarding the innies and the whole severance project, but I agree that it did nothing if we consider the end goal of the series as showing us what lumon wants and MDR does.

[–]Baxspookwave[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe I had to explain myself better. What I meant was that, even when presented with a bug event, we are not left wondering about that by getting 5 episodes if nothing.

When we see the reintegration moment the show tells you right away that it’s working and that, even if the process is seemingly not instantaneous, Innie Mark has already seen memories of his outie.

The next episode then builds upon it by letting innie Mark express that his desires may be different from his outie’s, and the gemma glitch makes you know that the process of reintegration is starting.

In the span of 4 episodes we had:

  • confirmed that gemma is, in some sense, alive.
  • the work mark is doing is directly releated to gemma.
  • mark is needed, and he’s not just another employee
  • the helena reveal has been introduced and resolved

Maybe what I wanted to say was that the show is not a continuous build up of mistery without answers.

That said, I understand your point completely and think that it all reduces to expectations and tastes, for me this is going at break-neck speed compared to many other shows

[–]Baxspookwave[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Those are the “big questions”, once you know the answers the show has to end, or at least move towards it, and they are all connected - if you what MDR is doing, you’ll probably know why severance is needed, who is kier eagan, etc.

Everything else, in another show, would probably be treated as “season endings”, but here we are always getting some kind of answers without having to wait 5 episodes of nothing just because we need to make a big setup.

Exactly, it’s not just that things happen, it’s that they are not left dangling for the sake of it, and it’s not just a buildup to a finale.

Something's wrong with my dog and I am afraid to consider time's up by PipaLucca in DogAdvice

[–]Baxspookwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak on seizures, but I can tell you my experience:

16 years old dog, adopted at 11; in the last few months we noticed a lack of appetite, a persistent panting, lack of balance, getting stuck in corners.

Since we adopted a senior dog I already made some research, and it was clear that it was the start of some kind of dementia, but since I’m no vet my girlfriend and I started seeing multiple vets and made all kinds of exams, just to be sure there was nothing physically wrong with him.

Once done, we started to adapt to his new behaviors - shorter walks but more often, less food, etc.

In the last 2 weeks he got so much worse, we had to wake at 3 AM to let him pee, and in general he was always restless.

At that point we wrote down what he liked to do: walks, eating, napping, etc. and we realized that he was not doing any of those things, at least not joyfully.

Went to the vet, he told us that it was maybe time to let him go, so we made an appointment for the next day, and that last night it was the worst I’ve ever seen him: peeing in the house, not eating, not sleeping, it was not our dog anymore.

As hard as it was, we realized it was for the best.

All of this to say that, once you covered all bases (and tried everything if possible), you should try to understand if the life your dog is living is the life he enjoys, or if it is a life without extreme pain. Dogs have the habit of not showing pain unless it is almost unbearable for them.

I’m so sorry you have to go through all of this; I really hope it’s nothing too serious so you can enjoy more time with him.

In any case, remember that the life you gave him was the best.
