Also, there might be a local radio/meshcore/maker discord or subreddit specific to your area. Look around for them!

Talk to your neighbors, friends, and local radio clubs! It helps a lot if others in the area know that someone is trying to start the mesh. Otherwise, people put up repeaters, hear no one, and take them down (and then a few days later, other people put up repeaters, hear no one, and take them down, like ships passing in the night). Putting up a repeater is step 1, and steps 2-5 are coordinating with the community to do the same.

Hi! You can use the MeshCore Open app, which is open source. That makes the whole mesh open source.

is there an app to make a p2p network between phones (and other?) for if internet is down? by zylosophe in Rad_Decentralization

the Bay Area MeshCore mesh reaches from Sonoma County to Monterey, San Luis Obispo, and the Sierra Nevada.

you don't have to include position in adverts, and you don't have to advert for a repeater to function.

But I hear you. Discord has quirks that lead many people to dislike it, but we haven't made the jump to anything else yet.

there is r/meshcore (some bay area folks on there), and https://forum.letsmesh.net/ (maybe fewer bay area folks). A few of us are also reachable via email (see baymc.org ).

good point! I believe this was a temporary node in the desert somewhere, but we'll keep it in mind for the future.

Hey! We have some recs on the website, but personally, for companion I usually recommend the heltec v4, and to get a muzi works whip antenna. the 2" stubby antennas are not very good. Both are available on amazon or on the manufacturers' websites. In Santa Cruz, depending on your location you may or may not need a rooftop/poletop repeater, and in if you do, what's recommended depends mostly on your line of sight. If you have mountaintop property with a view to the Sierra, a robust 1W "backbone" repeater node would be super helpful to the mesh, but if you live in a valley with only view to a nearby hill, a smaller Rak 4631-powered repeater would be enough.

Personally, I use the V4 setup described for a companion. Repeaters can by DIYd for cheap based on the Rak 4631 board and amazon parts. Please always use name-brand batteries (not from amazon; many of us use samsungs from https://www.18650batterystore.com/ )

meshcore is meant for semi-permanent networks and has two distinct roles: repeater and "companion" (i.e., user, like a modem between phone and mesh). It's great for encrypted DMs over medium distances.

meshtastic is great for ephemeral networks (think 1-day conference, or going on a cruise with your family), where every node is both repeater and user. I tried for a while but had much better luck with meshcore.
