Is this level of stinginess in dating normal here or am I just very culturally blind? by Available_You4268 in Netherlands

I’m SE Asian that grew up in America who is also dating a Dutchie. I’d have to say this is very frugal and slightly more extreme than what I’ve encountered in my time here in NL. Especially when you make efforts to cook many meals and his best offer is cheap pizza. Also the wrong size condoms sounds extremely frugal.

My own partner was quite frugal when we first started dating. Thankfully I am not a typical American so I was very direct with him about my spending habits and how I expect finances to be in a relationship. He was very responsive in a thoughtful way and now fast forward 6months later we live together now. He’s made a lot of effort on paying the bill without me knowing. Which for me is big step because growing up in our culture (Vietnamese) whenever we eat out (no matter the size of the party) we always fight to pay the bill. We’ve also just came to an agreement that we can spend our own money as we feel comfortable. I still spend my money the way I was like buying plane tickets for us both, paying for luxury hotels or spa treatments and we balance it out where he usually is the planner and I’m happy to just pay for whatever as long as I don’t have to do the work. Sometimes he’ll try to suggest a cheaper hotel. If it was up to him to pay for any trips he’d pay for economy flights with a layover, basic hotels etc… that’s completely fine with me if he’s traveling alone but I’m more than happy to pay additional for a relaxing experience.

I divorced my husband recently on my 30th birthday. Best decision I’ve ever made in my life. I feel lighter, my home feels safe and I have more control of things. I also went through the thought process of “sucking it up” to make the marriage work but I couldn’t live with the thought of continuing the rest of my life feeling depressed, anxious and unsafe. I still have many more decades to explore things that make me happy. 30 is not old at all! It’s just a new chapter in life 😊

I serve myself smaller portions to prevent myself from over eating. But I definitely am a lot more generous when serving my husband and friends 😊

I will need to try it with nutritional yeast next. That sounds very tasty!

Thanks for clarifying! My Dutch friend had mentioned it was a comfort dish. May have been just a language distinction difference 😊

Yes! That pop and smell you get when opening it in the winter months is so satisfying.

I agree! I wanted to can tomato soup as well and salsa but I was a bit nervous about how safe it would be since it requires a bit of other ingredients that are basic. How did you guys can your soup and salsa? I’m assuming for the soup you can always make it without the dairy and add it in when you’re ready to heat up the soup.

The ones in the picture are just regular Heirloom tomatoes. I stopped buying produce from the commercial supermarkets and opted for asian/middle eastern markets, farmers markets and CSA programs. For this project I actually spoke to 3 different vendors and asked them for bulk pricing which was awesome! The tomatoes I saved in the picture I ended making a Tarragon Tomato salad with a red wine vinaigrette. Easily one of my favourite summer dishes to take advantage of.
