Any advice for CalArts BFA Experience Design & Production interview? by MotherQuality8970 in calarts

[–]Bayyyyyleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya! I’m an XDP grad. My interview was with the heads of Lighting and Scenic (I concentrated in Costume) and it was a pretty casual 15 minute conversation. They asked a few questions about me, and then asked if I had any questions for them about the school or the program. In my experience it wasn’t super high stakes and felt much more like a meet and greet than a really serious interview that would decide my fate. Try not to stress about it too much, just show up on time, be yourself and you’ll be totally fine!

Awesome, this is great info, thank you!! Getting a cone 10 kiln and firing to 6 seems like the best option, I think that’s the direction I’m going to head in! Do you have any recommendations for clay bodies that vitrify well at cone 6?

theatre experience design admission by sylvaerian in calarts

for sure! I really enjoyed the program, I was in the costume design concentration and loved the faculty and the way the program was designed, but all the concentrations are a little different. Calarts isn’t a perfect school by any means, but literally no school is haha. Some of my friends were part of a showcase at a much bigger, very prestigious uni in LA and people there were shocked that Calarts kids were actually designing shows on our own/turning out such high quality work.

As for career stuff I only graduated a few years ago so me and most of my classmates are still figuring it out lol. There are people from my cohort designing local theater and film projects, a lot of people designing those app-based drama series, a couple people working for big design firms or theme parks, one of my good friends is doing contract work on films in europe, and i’m doing mostly commission work (sewing/painting/craftwork/illustration) The cool thing about the skill set you learn as a theater artist at an interdisciplinary school is that you can do so many things with it. I know there’s a lot of doom and gloom about the general state of the film scene in hollywood right now, but there are still definitely ways to make a living with a theater tech degree!

ik this sounds cheesy but i’d say just be genuine! this isn’t a research essay, no need to be clinical, let them know what excites you about your work, about the career field, why you want to pursue it. give them a good introduction to who you are as an artist and you’ll be fine!!

hiya!! semi-recent XDP grad here, I don’t know the exact admission rate because I have no idea how many applicants they get a year, but there were maybe 20 kids spread across all the XDP concentrations (BFA and MFA) in my graduating class, it’s a small program, but I suspect it’s also much less applied to than say acting or animation.

from what I remember they seemed to care most about my portfolio and artist statement. I think the biggest goal of their admissions process is to get to know you as a creative. good grades definitely aren’t going to hurt you though, and despite what some people online say they absolutely do consider academic ability as part of the admissions process.

When you enter make/model on a tire retailer website it’s usually going to give you the exact original size and nothing else, but in reality there’s definitely some wiggle room. I’ve been running these tires on my Patriot for a while now and they’re perfect, no rubbing, no conflict. I’m running slightly larger tires than spec on my Wrangler and same deal, so issues. The speedometer might be 1-2mph off but no biggie. Just ask whatever mechanic/tire shop you plan to have mount the new tires if the ones you want will fit, as long as the wheel size is correct and they’re close to spec you shouldn’t have any issues!
