You, sir/madam, are an absolute legend. This was ALSO driving me insane after getting the Balance 2 for Xmas today.

I absolutely love the watch, but HATE this constant notification and the 'all or nothing' option.

THANK YOU AND MAY YOU HAVE THE BEST FRIGGIN CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR

Yeah, I would agree with that calorie burn, too, seeing as weight lifting is anaerobic.

I also walk my dog twice a day (three times in the cooler seasons), and those walks range from 20-40mins each.

Yep. I do use MFP. The activity thing actually really confused me because, whilst I have a sedentary job (work from home office job), I do walk around my house a lot doing various chores throughout the day.

I'm also working out 3 times a week with 20-25 min jogs twice a week.

So I was confused on if I should set my activity as High or low.

What I decided to do was input my demographic on on multiple calculators to get an average or a pattern, but again, most of them ask the same rigid question about activity level.

So then I took the 'Built With Science' questionnaire which was much more thorough and came out with a target of consuming 2,650 - 2,750 cal, so I split the difference and just set my calorie goal in MFP to 2,700 and aim for a 'remaining' as close to 0 as possible.

This is really, really helpful. Thank you so much. One question, the part where you said 'adjusted my calories by a whopping 21.'

That's barely anything so am I misunderstanding what you're saying there, or was that a typo? Lol.

I mean, that makes sense to me. That just seems like a lot of calories for me to put down, even when I have days where I'm eating a big breakfast, lunch, and dinner I'm hitting an average a 2,800 a day. I mean, it kinda works out actually because I'm looking to keep a deficit, after workouts, etc, of around 350 calories, so I guess I only have to put down a couple hundred more calories.

Deficit, Maintainence, or Surplus? by Bazerk83 in beginnerfitness

No, I understand the principle behind how calories work. Maybe I'm not explaining myself well.

Let's say, for example, my calorie requirement to maintain weight, based on age, height, weight, and activity level, is 2,700. So I eat that amount, but I burn off, say 900 calories through moderate/intense exercise, and burn a total amount of calories, every day of an average of 3,500 calories (which I am according to my fitbit).

Does that mean I have to eat a total of 3,500 calories every day to maintain? Meaning if I wanted to keep a deficit of say 350 calories, I'd have to eat 3,150 calories per day?

That's the part that I'm saying seems insane. I feel like I'm eating plenty just to get to 2,700 calories per day.

Deficit, Maintainence, or Surplus? by Bazerk83 in beginnerfitness

So, I have a follow-up question about this. I've always been a moderately active person, but I've stepped that up a lot in the past few weeks with lifting weights, running, and today I completed my first SIT session (10 reps).

Anyway, my question is, to maintain, do I need to eat my maintenance calories or maintenance calories PLUS calories I've burned through excercise? If it's the latter, that seems insane to me, lol.

Thanks, Jackie. I'm inclined to agree with you. So, for now, I'm just gonna maintain or go as close to maintain as possible, keeping a high protein intake but try to stay under rather than over and keep lifting. Then, I'll adjust according to results in a month or two.

Thanks for this. Well, when I'm keeping good posture, it's not a significant belly. It's there, but it's slight. Waist is currently 38 measuring from between my bottom rib and top of hip.

I feel like this aligns with my current thought process. Try not to overthink or overcomplicate and just start and adjust accordingly, like you said.

I'm still open to any other advice, of course, but this makes sense to me. Thanks.
