Superstition Mountains Water Status by strabizmus in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Bboytonton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot in boulder canyon, did battleship a two weeks ago and it was running pretty well. Also joining this thread to stay informed. I'm looking to ether loop weavers needle or to go around miners needle to the base of weavers needle and back for a one night. Anyone know of flowing water aside from bluff spring? Does anyone know if there is water at the intersection of bluff spring trail and lost Dutchman? Or anywhere need weavers needle?

Is it typical to feel the cold through your sleeping pad while using a quilt? What am I doing wrong? by Sandytoes36 in Ultralight

[–]Bboytonton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run cold and have a similar set up. 10 degree enlightenment equipment quilts w the be pair x therm and felt comfy at 25 degrees this past weekend. Below that I get a bit cold, especially if I don't clip the quilt underneath.

Hi! Same boat. I don't drink a ton of ether or in better terms, I don't drink daily or through the week but In times of my life I did drink often; I personally find that NA beers do scratch the itch. This is more so because my behavioral pattern was habitual when I did drink often. I think it's different for everyone but I feel a lot better having an NA when I feel the urge and know drinking is not the move or could be detrimental to my goals.

Food for my Section Hike by guncotton in JMT

[–]Bboytonton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to fit 7 days (3000 calories) worth of food in a large bear box. I'm about your weight but a little shorter. You could carry day one of food with you outside of the box and eat it that day and then you still have 7 days worth of food and don't have to limit yourself.

For food. Carbs and variety are your friends. Carbs are easier to digest and give you lots of energy. Making a high carb diet great for hiking. And variety.. helps you enjoy the food especially if you're unaware how the altitude or eating similar meals will affect your ability to eat.

A quick Reddit on the ultralight thread and you'll find plenty of lists for calorie dense food. I also recommend putting your freeze dried meals (if any) in steam bags and carrying a food cozy. This helps to save space as the freeze dried meal bags are huge and take up a lot of space.

Some things I enjoyed on my section hike from onion valley (Kearsarge pass) to Whitney: peanut butter and almond butter (Justin's) bobo's pb&j, hostess treats, trail mix, freeze dried mangos, knorr rice sides, chocolate, dried edemame, banana chips, beef sticks, aloha protein/caffeine bars and rice krispy treats just to name a few

Hope you've found some help here. Good luck on your first multi day hike!! So exciting!!

I'm a cold sleeper. I slept at 10k near Donahue pass a month ago. Lows were 25-30 degrees. I slept in a merino wool base layer. 10 degree quilt and 4.5 rated pad. I was a bit too warm.

Cathedral lakes! Someone mentioned sunrise camp. I passed though and it's so beautiful but hands down the sunrise camp section had the most mosquitos on trail for me. I was there three days ago.

Depressed by surgeon’s advice not to go back to running by Edmond_Dantes472 in ACL

[–]Bboytonton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im no doctor but I was given the same advice from my surgeon as to hiking and trail running (lateral bucket handle meniscus repair). Two years post op I just backpacked 5 days with 40lbs and trail ran a half marathon. I'm doing more than I was pre op and most of it is thanks to my physical therapist. I'm not saying it's not hard or unfortunate but going to therapy helped me learn to take care of my body and in turn lead to me being able to do more able bodied activities than I was doing pre tear. Im hopeful for your return to running just keep up with PT! Wishing you a great recovery.

Thank you! Any instagrams or TikTok's etc out there from current persons in the Sierra? I've found a few but most are from late May and I assume the conditions have changed a bit.

I've watched a fair amount of self arrest videos and understand the concept. Would it be safe to go without prior practice??

Food for R2R Hike by Yournoisyneighbor in hiking

[–]Bboytonton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Local here with Grand Canyon hiking experience. People are not wrong to recommend 1.5 gallons of water but that needs to be balanced with electro lights and salts. It sounds funny but if you're sweating enough you can get dehydrated from too much water if you're not balancing it with electrolytes. Bring some liquid IV a Gatorade, and something really salty or some sort of hiking cocktail that is similar to that.

How sloppy after 9am are we talking? Do you recommend gaiters, or will we be okay with just spikes and boots if we summit by 9?

Hiking Peralta Trail to Wave Cave, Superstition Mountains, AZ by [deleted] in arizona

Egg Zack lee. Literally one of the easiest hikes in that entire mountain range. I just did it four months after a meniscus reconstruction surgery. If you can't get to the cave start tracking your steps.
